About this listen

London, 1882. When the World's End Investigation Bureau receives an anxious visit from a trio of elderly siblings, Lily Raynor and Felix Wilbraham realise that the Fetterplaces are keeping back the heart of the matter. Ancient bones have been uncovered in their garden, and they believe they know whose they are. But so does someone else.

On visiting the old house, they are frustrated by the distressed siblings forbidding an inspection their rose bed. Felix returns by night. . .and discovers that the Fetterplace siblings have good reason for their fear. Unconscious and gravely injured, Felix is brought back to Lily's door by concerned strangers.

Fully occupied with trying to save his life, Lily begins to wonder who attacked him, and why. Who is buried in the makeshift grave? Did Felix discover something sinister alongside the bones? Whatever it was, it must be dangerous indeed if keeping it secret requires taking a life.

I binged this series and bought this latest audiobook without reading the blurb. I've enjoyed getting to know Lilly, Felix and the adventures they've gone on throughout the series.

I found this book incredibly dark and found it at times quite hard to listen to so would have a long break in between listenings. This is because we learnt of the inner thoughts of the killer and his taste for murder and what he liked to do to the bodies once dead. In saying this I did finish it but wouldn't listen to it again and I could understand if some people gave up. I do hope the darkness of this book is confined to this one alone and that any future books in the series are lighter similar to those of book 1-3. Disappointed in this book. I've learnt my lesson to always read the blurb regardless of how much I enjoy the author.

Quite different from earlier novels
