Publisher's Summary

A young artist forges a path of self-discovery in an enriching novel about forgiving the past and embracing second chances, from the bestselling author of An Unfinished Story.

Maine, 1969. After losing her parents in a car accident, aspiring artist Annalisa Mancuso lives with her grandmother and their large Italian family in the stifling factory town of Payton Mills. Inspired by her mother, whose own artistic dreams disappeared in a damaged marriage, Annalisa is dedicated only to painting. Closed off to love, and driven as much by her innate talent as she is the disillusionment of her past, Annalisa just wants to come into her own.

The first step is leaving Payton Mills and everything it represents. The next, the inspiring opportunities in the city of Portland and a thriving New England art scene where Annalisa hopes to find her voice. But she meets Thomas, an Ivy League student whose attentions - and troubled family - upend her pursuits in ways she never imagined possible. As their relationship deepens, Annalisa must balance her dreams against an unexpected love. Until the unraveling of an unforgivable lie.

For Annalisa, opening herself up to life and to love is a risk. It might also be the chance she needs to finally become the person and the artist she’s meant to be.

I didn’t want this story to end!

This a beautiful story with excellent, layered characters! I loved living the life of his main character Annalisa & seeing the world through her eyes. I’m constantly in awe of Boo Walker’s ability to write these amazing female characters - it’s a true gift! Thank you Boo for showing us that vulnerability & strength can coexist & drive us to do great things with our lives. You are one of my favorite writers & I can’t wait for you to tell me another epic story! As for the narration - Cassandra Campbell is simply the best in the business. She fill my days with beautiful, nuanced narration. I’m so grateful for her incredible talent!

Message to the oldest baby boomers like me

The author captured many aspects of my life in the late 60’s to early 70’s. Reading it was a very introspective, emotional return to life in that era.
I was very moved and would highly recommend this book.

second chance romance

This book is definitely chick lit at its finest. On the fence about a 4 rating just because it is too long. A little corny but I had no trouble finishing it.

You won't be disappointed.

A beautifully woven tale of love and forgiveness. A must read. I can't wait for it to become the next "notebook " esq. type movie. Boo Walker is quickly becoming my favorite author.

Endlessly frustrating

This story could have been told in half the time. The amount of internal dialoguing is tedious and unnecessary. The narrator is skilled at mimicking accents etc, but, sorry, I find voice a little too saccharin. Of course I wanted to see how it ended, so I did a lot of fast forwarding.

Boo Walker hits it out of the park

After the Red Mountain series, I wasn’t sure this story would be big enough to compete. Boo did it again. The feelings you have while reading are intense. I very quickly identified with Annelisa being a child of the same era and followed her dreams with her. Walker uses his words to paint pictures just as effectively as Annelisa uses a brush.

Pleasant story with some twists

Easy to listen to though left me guessing what was around the next bend. War and class struggles form the main obstacles of the story. It also reminded how recently women’s work environments were so insulting.

A beautiful, simply engaging novel.

I could go back and read this over again. It was so close to life in every way. No need to bring angst or misery to the forefront. It was there but skillfully painted with words. Loved it. Thank you Boo.
