Critic Reviews

“Klassen expertly infuses her … inspirational tale with a gothic atmosphere, resulting in a sweetly intriguing romance worthy of Victoria Holt.” ( Booklist)

I enjoyed the plot which seemed to include surprise after surprise. The characters were well developed and the story included enough mystery to keep me guessing all the way through.

Back in that era there was evil just as there is today but social media has put a different spin onto failings. However, it’s a great opportunity to be able to step back into the past in someone else’s shoes and live at a different pace. There were a number of obstacles along the way which gave the listener a chance to indulge in some armchair investigation. The reading tone of the manuscript fit the story which I enjoyed immensely. The ending dealt with the unanswered questions leaving me well satisfied once again.

The Author’s Research impeccable as always paves the way for another great book.

What an awesome story. This kept me engaged from beginning to end. Great narration. Brilliant ways of describing the times the history and the places they were. All gave me a great mental viewing of the areas they graced. Looking forward to a second listen.

This was the first novel I’d listened to by Julie Klassen, and wow was I impressed. It’s a very creative regency tale, well-researched and informative. I liked that she’d open each chapter with a published anecdote relevant to the impending scene that would unfold. There were indeed many twists and turns to this clever clean romance which I found to be a refreshing departure from typical formulaic historical romances. I highly recommend.

Engrossing!

Personally I found the religious catechism took away from the story and I felt I was at Sunday School. I believe there should be a warning about this.

Unnecessary catechism
