Yet another one that goes from 0 to 100 in 0.5sec
- By Paulie on 21-08-2014
Publisher's Summary
"I very much need to be dead."
These are the chilling words left behind by a man who had everything to live for - but took his own life. In the aftermath, his widow, Jane Hawk, does what all her grief, fear, and fury demand: find the truth, no matter what.
People of talent and accomplishment, people admired and happy and sound of mind, have been committing suicide in surprising numbers. When Jane seeks to learn why, she becomes the most-wanted fugitive in America. Her powerful enemies are protecting a secret so important - so terrifying - that they will exterminate anyone in their way.
But all their power and viciousness may not be enough to stop a woman as clever as they are cold-blooded, as relentless as they are ruthless - and who is driven by a righteous rage they can never comprehend. Because it is born of love.

Terrible Narrative
Nothing personal towards the Narrator however I have to say, the narration ruined the story. Her voice was so monotone that I could only bear to listen at 1.5x the speed.
I have just finished listening to the Outlander series who’s narrator is excellent so perhaps that made the listening of this narrative that much worse but from now on I will remember to listen BEFORE I buy.

Great story!!
Ok, I originally gave this book a bit of a poor review because it ended so abruptly I was left wanting more... But then I found out it was just the first in a series of books, so I was absolutely thrilled and I take it all back!! I've now listened to all four books in the series and the story is just brilliant, she is a great character and even all the extras along the way are brilliant characters. The twists and turns this story takes often left me slapping my hand over my mouth and gasping! Can't imagine what anyone in the car next to me might have thought... :) Highly recommend this series to everyone, I listened every chance I got, I just couldn't put it down.

The Silent Corner
I am very disappointed. Parts of the story are fine and even moved me. However, most of the narrative seems to be filler - just a way to link incident to incident. I had been hoping to find a new author to enjoy. Sigh.

Finally fantastic!
Having been a massive Koontz fan for years, I had been so disappointed with his last few novels that I had practically given up on him.
As this book had good reviews I decided to give it a go and I’m so glad I did! The book is fast paced with good characters and an almost (well, you never know) believable plot!
The narrator is ok but it did go to check my phone a few times because of the ridiculous long pauses between chapters but the story makes up for that!
Definitely worth it!!!!

Why did I stray from paperbacks?!?!
Great story from Mr Koontz virtually ruined by the clipped narration, for example I was 3 chapters in before I realised the main characters name was “Jane” and not “Ane”! This clipped narration continues throughout the story. Couple this with odd pronunciation and you find yourself at times going backwards to try and understand what was said, for example the fire arm pronunciation “Heckler & Koch” is pronounced “Heckler and Coke”! Of course I realise this is probably my personal preference but I have never heard it pronounced as such anywhere else! But if this wasn’t bad enough the chapter numbers were at odds with the narration making tracking your place a nightmare. WIFI warnings were aplenty despite the icon always being visible. I could go on but it’s fair to say it’s further technical and recording problems were noticeable throughout! I’m trying to download one more book to give it one last chance and if it’s not 3 or more stars I’m going back to paperbacks.......sadly!!!

Another good book from Dean
Not my favourite genre of Dean's if I'm honest but he still puts out a good read (or listen in this case)...I prefer him doing the supernatural (Odd Thomas is the best series ever), but I am still looking forward to seeing Jane Hawk develop...
The Silent Corner is a good solid introduction to Jane that should make most readers look forward to the next installment...

Not Koontz finest work
I struggled to finish this.....and it had a most unsatisfactory ending. Main character was 2 dimensional and no woman/mother would have reacted the way she did. It is hard to explain without spoilers so I won't elaborate. If the “left in mid air“ ending to the book is to leave it open for a second book I won't bother to read it....but my opinion is the sloppy ending is due to this story going nowhere! I recommend you read any other Dean Koontz book than this one. The narrator did a good job.

Audio books in general
I enjoy Dean Koonzt, but would rather read him than listen to someone else reading it. Unfortunately I am I n a situation in which I am losing my sight a n d therefore have little choice in the matter. My One complaint with narration, is the attempt of the narrator to speak the voices of the various characters within the story, it is so amateurish.
