Publisher's Summary

A dead conspiracy theorist. A mass murderer. Two cases collide for Callahan and McLane in a pulse-pounding thriller by Wall Street Journal and Amazon Charts bestselling author Kendra Elliot.

A man is savagely murdered outside Portland, and Detective Mason Callahan finds blood-spatter evidence that tells a troubling story. Files reveal the murder victim, Reuben Braswell, was a radical conspiracist. In his home, investigators find pages of diatribes against law enforcement as well as ties to Mason’s fiancée, FBI special agent Ava McLane. The victim was her informant - and had strong reasons to be paranoid.

To Ava, Braswell’s rants were those of a wearying and harmless man...until they collide with her investigation into the murders of police officers and finding the connection becomes urgent. Meanwhile, Braswell’s brother and Ava’s twin sister both disappear, and disturbing acts of sabotage target Ava’s personal life.

For Mason and Ava, the brutal crimes and escalating mysteries create a perfect storm for a terrorist conspiracy that becomes dangerously personal - one that has yet to claim its last victim.

FBI agent and detective

Detective Mason Callahan was assigned the murder investigation of Ava’s informant. Rueben was found murdered in his house. He was Ava’s informant. He hated cops and anyone to do with them. He was paranoid and a conspiracy-theory believer. He always thought he was being watched. Mason worked his investigation parallel with Ava’s case. It appears that Ava’s life was in danger. Someone thinks she has information that could get her killed. Ava has a twin sister that she always took care of. Jayne was the reckless sister. Ava lost patience with her sisters lifestyle. Jayne’s past was full of illegal drugs, petty crimes, and stealing whatever she could from her twin. She lost contact with her for awhile causing Ava’s concern to grow. Overall: Kendra offered the perfect balance between the personal life and business life. Although it was easy considering both main characters worked in law enforcement and were working on the same case. This was a fast pace thriller with plenty of police activity. The detectives delved right into the investigation with great success. I liked that the detectives had leads to follow which produced successful results. I felt it was quite entertaining to read. The delivery of both personal and business relations was great. Combining these relations kept the story flowing without interruption. It helped that the lifestyles of the main characters were similar. Working as a detective is demanding but then factor it into your personal life and it becomes challenging. I liked the minimal police procedures. There was no profiling. What they worked with from the initial murder provided enough information to start a proper investigation. This is my first read by Kendra Elliot. I dove right into book 2 in the Columbia River series with no problems. Not reading book 1 didn’t hinder my experience at all. This was a character driven story with Ava and Mason as the main characters driven by dialogue focusing on the investigation while simultaneously living a personal life of danger. Mason Callahan has been an important character in Kendra Elliot’s books since her debut novel, Hidden, came out in 2012. She knew for years that she left unanswered questions about Mason, Ava, and Jayne. She intended to return to them after she wrote a few Mercy Kilpatrick books. However, she didn’t anticipate writing six Mercy books. Narrator: Listened at 1.9x speed. Emily Sutton-Smith performed the Silence in it’s entirety. She was the solo female performer for all the characters. This was an unabridged audiobook. Emily’s performance was a suitable match to the style of this thrilling book. I would definitely give her another listen.

The author and the narrator are a great pair .

This book is certainly great as a standalone, but even better if you've read the series.

Awful

This is just plain awful. I could not listen anymore. There are not a lot of books that make me cringe. Once the cringe-worthiness of this offering reached epic level, I just could not deal with it anymore. In the meantime, a little note to the "author" - there is not an FBI agent in the country, nor any member of the OSP that would act or behave this way. Do some research. Awful. I do not even know how to relay just how bad this is. I found myself actually feeling bad for the narrator for having to read this crap out loud.

Another good one.

I like Kendra Elliot’s books so I knew I would want to finish this one with as few pauses as possible. I spent my day off with this one.

Pretty bad

Long way from Phoenix to LA but in the end ((actually after two hours) I just couldn’t listen anymore. Story is bad in itself but narration made it even worse. Dramatically delivering cliches doesn’t work usually, only when you are facetious. Waste of time and money
