Publisher's Summary

A Wall Street Journal bestseller.

A dead conspiracy theorist. A mass murderer. Two cases collide for Callahan and McLane in a pulse-pounding thriller by Wall Street Journal and Amazon Charts bestselling author Kendra Elliot.

A man is savagely murdered outside Portland, and Detective Mason Callahan finds blood-spatter evidence that tells a troubling story. Files reveal the murder victim, Reuben Braswell, was a radical conspiracist. In his home, investigators find pages of diatribes against law enforcement as well as ties to Mason’s fiancée, FBI special agent Ava McLane. The victim was her informant - and had strong reasons to be paranoid.

To Ava, Braswell’s rants were those of a wearying and harmless man…until they collide with her investigation into the murders of police officers and finding the connection becomes urgent. Meanwhile, Braswell’s brother and Ava’s twin sister both disappear, and disturbing acts of sabotage target Ava’s personal life.

For Mason and Ava, the brutal crimes and escalating mysteries create a perfect storm for a terrorist conspiracy that becomes dangerously personal - one that has yet to claim its last victim.

Narrator needs to learn how to pronounce local landmarks

I really enjoy Kendra Elliot’s Oregon based books both for the stories and the familiar location. However the narrator of her books needs to learn how to pronounce place names. She finally got The Dallas correct, but book after book she continues to mispronounce Willamette. It is not the “WILLA met” river. It is the “wi LAM et” river. Also Cannon beach not Canyon beach

Too many loopholes.

It was an OK story but too many loopholes made it implausible. I did enjoy the continuation of characters from The Secret Sister.

Good story

My biggest objection to this book was the narrator. Not that she was bad. I can imagine her in several other books I’ve read, but that controlled, sultry voice just did not fit Ava. She did pretty well with the separation of other character voices, but as Ava just too slow and too sultry. Didn’t feel the character Ava was solid. One minute she’s a controlled and determined Special Agent with the FBI and then she’s all soft and gooey when she’s with Mason. I can handle the emotion that I know our protectors must feel at the loss of life and the hurt they see in their jobs, but it just went from one end to the other too much. I would be wary of partnering with Ava on the job. Same with Mason. Story was pretty good.

Great Story!💜

I really enjoyed this story. It’s always fun to visit familiar characters and follow their stories. This storyline was good but IMO a little longer than it needed to be. The narration was good but had a hard time distinguishing between characters, particularly the male voices.
This is book 2 and has an HEA.

Twisted, Complicated, and Intriguing

This plot doesn't have twists- it has hairpin turns like a steep mountain road. It's a good story, built upon wonderful characters that masterfully guide the reader through the maze of deception and decades lost. While the location and cast of characters (from the charming and eccentric to the hateful and sociopathic) have seen life in other works of the author, this story can easily be read as a stand-alone.

Intriguing story

I have enjoyed many Kendra Elliott stories. Well written, great story telling and involves Oregon towns and landmarks. However, because the story tells of those sites the reader/performer should properly pronounce the places. Surprised Kendra allowed Willamette, The Dallas & Cannon beach to be pronounced poorly. As a Oregonian I winced every time those places were mentioned
