Publisher's Summary

Five footprints are the only sign that Daniel Buck was ever here. And now they are all his mother has left.

Every day Anna Buck guards the little prints in the cement. Polishing them to a shine. Keeping them safe. Spiralling towards insanity. When a psychic offers hope, Anna grasps it. Who wouldn't? Maybe he can tell her what happened to her son....

But is this man what he claims to be? Is he a visionary? A shut eye? Or a cruel fake preying on the vulnerable? Or is he something far, far worse?

Excellent read

Great story, well told. Gripped me totally and listened in two days but could easily have done it in one sitting. Love this writer and can't wait for next book.

Dreadful

What an absolutely ridiculous story, there seemed to be no purpose to anything.

The characters are beyond belief - there wasn't a single one who was even remotely likeable, it was just crazy , their behaviour and actions were just so unbelievable I could hardly bear it - I only kept with it so that I could find out what happened to a particular character - this was not resolved!

I just feel thoroughly let down and wish I could get the 9 hours back!

Narration was OK though

I really wanted to like this, but.....

What did you like best about The Shut Eye? What did you like least?

That it was a psychological thriller that kept me guessing and wondering for most of the book. The 'psychic' element was unusual / different and I enjoyed that. I liked most of Andrew Wincott's narration (he has a great voice and I could listen to him until the cows come home). However his women's voices were unconvincing and one or two of his male voices lacked subtlety.

Would you be willing to try another book from Belinda Bauer? Why or why not?

I am not sure. She writes very well, but I did not enjoy the characterisation or plot structure in this book, so it would put me off if her other books had similar qualities.

Which scene did you most enjoy?

Towards the end, where the mystery (regarding Edie and Daniel) is solved - I won't go into detail so as not to spoil it for others. However that particular scene was tense, dramatic and very gripping.

If this book were a film would you go see it?

Probably

Any additional comments?

I'd expected to like this book far more than I did in the end. It had a good opening and the author writes/ describes very well. It is also a good yarn - with lots of twists and turns. Some of the factors that diminished my enjoyment: I think the book was too long for the plot, meaning the story felt it was dragging at times. I did not find any of the characters very engaging (and I need that to enjoy a book). Some aspects of plot line were just implausible (I don't mean the psychic bits - they were ok). Overall the book was not by any means *bad*, just not as good as I thought it was going to be.

My favourite author!

What an incredible story. Every book of Belinda’s I’m so impressed with the flow of the descriptive language and the complete absorption of the story. She is such a talented writer!

Dreary start but stay with it

It takes a couple of hours before the story really gets going, during which time I almost gave up on it. It was just treading water, and I thought the parents observations were too maudlin, and the garage scenes just didn't tell me anything. Even the voices were grating. However when Inspector Marvel rocks up, the story gets going and I got into it then. I even started to like the voices. From then on really, I was kept interested, and the intertwining of story strands and characters keeps you guessing.

I think Marvel provided a nice sarcastic humorous element to it, to lighten it up. He could certainly do with his own series. I know that there are lots of cops out there, and he isn't too different, but the way he rubs up everyone the wrong way, but in a comical manner, makes you want him in every scene.

Another positive, is that the names are very distinct, so if you are listening to this over a number of months, you don't forget who people are

Intricate

The plot is intricate and satisfying, except that some of it hinges on ESP. Marvel is a great character.

Thoroughly enjoyed!

Great story line, great characters, very well narrated. The authors use of words to really paint a picture in your mind was fantastic :-)
