Publisher's Summary

Sherlock Holmes is a fictional detective of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, who first appeared in publication in 1887. He is the creation of Scottish born author and physician Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. A brilliant London-based detective, Holmes is famous for his intellectual prowess, and is renowned for his skillful use of deductive reasoning (somewhat mistakenly - see inductive reasoning) and astute observation to solve difficult cases. He is arguably the most famous fictional detective ever created, and is one of the best known and most universally recognizable literary characters in any genre.

Conan Doyle wrote four novels and fifty-six short stories that featured Holmes. All but four stories were narrated by Holmes' friend and biographer, Dr. John H. Watson, two having been narrated by Holmes himself, and two others written in the third person. The first two stories, short novels, appeared in Beeton's Christmas Annual for 1887 and Lippincott's Monthly Magazine in 1890. The character grew tremendously in popularity with the beginning of the first series of short stories in The Strand Magazine in 1891; further series of short stories and two serialized novels appeared almost right up to Conan Doyle's death in 1930.

Scalon's narration is superior to Fry's

A few months ago, I purchased the SH collection narrated by Stephen Fry and had a difficult time getting into the series. When the option to buy this series narrated by Stephen Scalon for less then a dollar, I jumped at it. For the first few chapters, I alternated between narrators but it became clear that Scalon's narration was superior to Fry's...at least for my audio pleasure.

Fully Realized Sherlock Holmes

This is another great Holmes collection. This is just as good as the Frye version. Both narrators are top notch and bring Sherlock to life. So, check out the audible samples and see which one you like best. You know the stories, so I won’t review them. What matters most is the narrator, and this one is great. Highly recommended.

Hours of intrigue

The complete Sherlock Holmes collection is truly a gem. The performance was quite good and the stories got me through a 10,000 mile road trip. Quite enjoyable!

Brilliant material.

I loved this .. great and beatiful books read by a great orator. Although I must admit some of the female voices are so tedious I wanted to quit listening. Beyond that I loved the book and performance.

Great books deserve better narrator

Excellent stories by a great writer. It's easy to understand why people feel as though Sherlock Holmes was a real person. The reader generally sounds good, although his approximations of women's and children's voices are a bit distracting. He occasionally mispronounces words in odd ways. For example, he says "desert spoon" when presumably "dessert spoon" was intended by the author. In "a Study in Scarlet" he does a passable American accent, yet persists in giving some words a gratingly British pronunciation (eg., "hareeem" instead of "harem"). Throughout, he pronounces "due" as "Jew" and "duty as "jooty"; "deduce" is "de-juice", "duke" is "jook", "leash" is "lash" and "sure" is "shore". There are many other odd pronunciations that make me wonder if he understands all the words. It's irritating, and I will try to avoid other books read by this guy. It's difficult to find a particular story, since the book has been divided into numbered "chapters" that don't list the titles. Instead of this, I recommend the version read by Stephen Fry.

Hard to navigate

I did not finish this. It seemed like a big hodgepodge of stories in no particular order. It is very long; in 4 parts and they are not labeled and I could not find and table of contents. I just could not get into it. Maybe I'll go back and try some more later.

Long but worth the listen.

Loved it! Only remember one chapter where words cut out from whole collection. Also this is very long collection, occasionally switching in parts to a German (for intro and conclusion to sections). This was confusing at first but I didn't mind it once I understood what was going on. should add that I have a good deal of Sir Conan Doyle's works and I do believe it helps if you actually enjoy mysteries.

The Narrator Makes Such Difference

I also have the Sherlock Holmes Collection narrated by Stephen Fry. But I really didn't like his narration. He makes it sound like the book is all about him and his voice and the story is secondary. I was very disappointed. But I have now bought a Sherlock Holmes Collection that is narrated by someone I've never heard of and it it's so much better. I am really enjoying listening to the stories. The narrator is Stephen Scalon. I far prefer his narration. With the Stephen Fry book I gave up listening. But with the Stephen Scalon narration I listen every chance I get. Much, much better in my opinion. It shows how crucial the narrator is to whether an Audio book is enjoyable or not. Good idea to listen to the sample to try and get an idea.

Excellent Fantastic Definately the Best Narration

I have been a huge fan of Sherlock Holmes since I was very young, to be able to get the whole collection as an audiobook is a dream, but to have such a fantastic narrator, is simply magic, he brings every story to life, never bored. Personally I feel this narration is far superior to Stephen Fry´s narration. Highly recommend.

Great unfortunately to few Sherlock books written.

Writing has not evolved in 2020. Personally I only read stuff written in the past, much better.

Great value

There are innumerable Shelock Holmes renditions but I have to say pound-for-pound this is great value. it doesn't have a famous narrator but it is entirely listenable and a thoroughly worthwhile and enjoyable listen

Great BUT play at 1.2x speed!

Certainly a great deal on the entire famous collection, and essentially well read, but the speed is painful. I kept finding myself waiting for the next sentence. Sped up to 1.2x though this problem was resolved.

Could have been better

Enjoyable overall but not the complete collection I had expected. Half a dozen or so stories are inexplicably left out. The performance is also strange, with words like 'Progress' pronounced in the American fashion and, halfway through 'The hound of the Baskervilles' Sir Henry loses his American accent, only to regain it towards the end!

Amazing narration

This narrator is absolutely the best. I was almost convinced at some point that there was at least three different people doing the narration.

Excellent, especially because of the price

Bery cheap but more importantly a very enjoyable audiobook. Easy to listen to and very well read by the narrator. If you enjoy the Holmes novels then this is a brilliant method of listening to them when unable to read.

Enjoyable

Great set of stories. Narrator mispronounced quite a lot of place names and older words, but because they were pronounced phonetically they were comprehensible.
