Story
In Riversend, an isolated country town brought to its knees by endless drought, a charismatic and dedicated young priest steps out of his church and calmly opens fire on his congregation, killing five parishioners before being shot dead himself. A year later, troubled journalist Martin Scarsden arrives in Riversend to write a feature on the anniversary of the tragedy. But the stories he hears from the locals about the priest and incidents leading up to the shooting don't fit with the accepted version of events his own newspaper reported in an award-winning investigation.

Story
In the desolate outback town of Finnigans Gap, police struggle to maintain law and order. Thieves pillage opal mines, religious fanatics recruit vulnerable young people, and billionaires do as they please. Then an opal miner is found crucified and left to rot down his mine. Nothing about the miner's death is straightforward, not even who found the body. Sydney homicide detective Ivan Lucic is sent to investigate, assisted by inexperienced young investigator Nell Buchanan.

Gemma Guillory has lived in Rainier her entire life. She knows the tiny town's ins and outs like the back of her hand, the people like they are her family, their quirks as if they were her own. She knows her once-charming town is now remembered for one reason, and one reason only. That three innocent people died. That the last stop on the Rainier Ripper's trail of death seventeen years ago was her innocuous little teashop. Slow, plodding story
I loved Chris Hammers precious books, but this one missed the target by far. A very slow story, with lots of switching back and forth between timelines. The narrator was so set in his cadence it was almost impossible to listen. Returned, did not finish.

Great addition to the bush noir oeuvre
Chris Hammer continues to develop the Australian bush as a leading ‘character’ through “The Seven”. His mastery of weaving three time periods into a cohesive crime thriller combined with deep character development of his protagonists over multiple novels and his intimate understanding of the Australian landscape make him one of the most compelling and readable authors our country has produced.
Paired with Dorje Swallow’s laconic delivery, the whole suite of Hammer’s novels in Audible’s collection are captivating and thoroughly enjoyable.

Tortured plot,trying narration
I’ve enjoyed Chris Hammer’s previous books. The plots were clear, tight and well paced. This one was disjointed, difficult to track and ultimately unsatisfying.
Initially the narration was so annoyingly monotonous in its rhythm that I stopped listening. I returned to it only because I wanted to listen to Chris Hammer’s story ……
I liked the settings. outback Australia came alive as did the central characters, Ivan and Nell. There are so many incredible stories and characters from the Australian landscape like the Griffith years, political intrigues and unsolved outback disappearances I hope for better next time but I may have to read it.

Good, not great
Was quite surface level character development and so not overly relatable.
