When the call came it seemed like the answer to my prayers. My career as a voice actor had been over for months and me and my little girl Scarlet were living back at my mum’s place. I felt like a failure professionally—and with Scarlet having problems at school, as a parent as well. So, when I was asked to narrate a new book by disappeared novelist Philippa Roberts I jumped at the chance, even if it meant leaving Scarlet with my ex, Hugo, for a few weeks. Hugo, with his perfect new home and his perfect new girlfriend Saskia. But this isn’t a dream come true. It’s a nightmare.

I haven’t lived here long. The house is small and a little run-down, but each piece of faded floral wallpaper I peel away feels like unwrapping the second chance I never thought I’d get. I’m finally free to wear what I want, and I don’t flinch when I accidently burn dinner. My new home is warm, and the kids are safe inside. Anywhere would feel idyllic after the nightmare marriage I’ve just escaped.

The white-washed Italian villa is perfect. I thought it might feel odd, living in a stranger’s house for the summer, but as my husband and children swim in the infinity pool, I start to relax. And then, in the back of a wardrobe, I find something that shatters everything.... Sparkling green eyes, square jaw, lopsided smile. A young man with his arm around a beautiful woman. The picture is old and faded, but I’d recognize him anywhere. The man is my husband.

I never thought I would end up here. Alone, in a cold one-bedroom apartment, only seeing my precious daughter once a week. Another woman is living the life that was once mine. I wish I was still married to my ex-husband, the love of my life. I dream of tucking my five-year-old child into her ballerina bed sheets every night. I miss living in a beautiful house, the perfect family home, with a winding staircase and a sprawling garden. I’d do anything to be with my family again. To start over and prove to them that I’ve changed, that I won’t lose control like before.

Meh.. Okay Story, Predictable and Somewhat Juvenil
I like KL Slater and I love a good British narrated psychological thriller. 'The Secret' is about a woman who has lost her husband and her mother, and the only people she has in life are her nephew and her sister, Her sister treats the woman poorly, and she finds herself often watching her nephew. But something weird is going on.
Nephew is keeping secrets and Sister's mood swings are horrible.
The ending is fairly predictable. Slater tries a 'double twist' with this one that works somewhat.
There is no real 'wow' factor to 'The Secret.' It's worth the listen if you can get it on sale.

Another one off the Slater production line...
The first KL Slater book I read was Blink which I really enjoyed. Since then she has turned out a series of these increasingly slow paced dramas with big twists towards the end. Lucy Price Lewis has provided consistently strong narration.
The writing is good quality and fairly engaging but this one in particular is really so much more a family drama than anything I would think of as a thriller. It did try to jump into that territory right at the end but it all just feels like afterthought rather than logical progression.
If you have enjoyed this author's recent books then don't let me put you off this one. For me now I think there are much better constructed and definitely more thrilling thrillers to be found elsewhere.

Not the best K.L. Slater I have read.
I am a great fan of K.L. Slater books. I found The Secret has an interesting and intriguing storyline. I did enjoy the book however I would have liked it more if all the significant characters had been woven into the story from the beginning. For them to also have been given a bit of characterisation allowing the reader to get to know them.
Lucy Price-Lewis narration is superb.

Satisfying Psychological thriller
As always, K L Slater delivers an excellent psychological thriller. Alice, who lives on the third floor of a block of flats often spends her days gazing out of the window, and rarely leaves the flat. When her sister, a working mum, asks her to look after her son, Archie, before and after school Alice begins to wonder why he is so withdrawn and secretive.
Ms Slater expertly weaves a tale that draws you in, making you want just one more chapter when you know you should be sleeping! The plot is well constructed and had enough red herrings to totally confuse me! And I absolutely loved little Archie!

Good solid read
Another good book by KL Slater! A good story although doesn't have the gasp out loud twists that some of her other work does (although it does have twists). Easy to listen to as the narrator is clear and has a good speaking voice. Overall a good book but I'd recommend "Blink" (by the same author) over this one.

Great Story
Enjoyed the story, but the ending was a little rushed and spoiled the story for me a little. Otherwise very enjoyable.
