Publisher's Summary
Brought to you by Penguin.
A disappearance. A small town. A question that needs answering...
Cal Hooper thought a fixer-upper in a remote Irish village would be the perfect escape. After 25 years in the Chicago police force and a bruising divorce, he just wants to build a new life in a pretty spot with a good pub where nothing much happens.
But then a local kid comes looking for his help. His brother has gone missing and no one, least of all the police, seems to care. Cal wants nothing to do with any kind of investigation, but somehow he can't make himself walk away.
Soon Cal will discover that even in the most idyllic small town, secrets lie hidden, people aren't always what they seem and trouble can come calling at his door.
Our greatest living mystery writer weaves a masterful tale of breath-taking beauty and suspense, asking how we decide what's right and wrong in a world where neither is simple, and what we risk if we fail.
Critic Reviews
"One of the most compulsive psychological mysteries since Donna Tartt's The Secret History." (The Times)
"To say Tana French is one of the great thriller writers is really too limiting. Rather she's simply this: a truly great writer." (Gillian Flynn)
"I'm a big fan of Tana French." (Ian Rankin)

A good story
There's something cliched about the lead character Cal, in saying that Tana French weaves the magic that let's this tough copper fit in well to the rugged Irish countryside. I found out about this book from the NPR book concierge and I'm happy i got it. It's a good listen

I think I have just found my new favourite author
I loved the storyline and the way it was written. Roger Clark, the narrator is fantastic. I will certainly look for books narrated by him in the future.
I am more than happy to recommend this book.

Excellent "voice" and entertaining banter. Ending was a little anticlimactic but really enjoyable overall. Clever.

Always enjoyable
Tana French has quickly become one of my favourite authors and I can’t stop anything I start. At first with The Searcher, I was hesitant about the American accent of the main character, but as always, the character development shines through and I quickly became invested in the individuals. I really feel like I know each person in French’s stories and I connect with them deeply

Too much swearing
Story ok, good narrator, but I disliked the swearing. It wasn’t necessary and it distracted from the story.

Excellent story
I found the overall story and characterisation very well done. The word pictures the author wrote were vivid and brought the story to life.

Searching Story of Irish Delights
The central protagonist and his equal struggles with his delipidated house, intrusive Irish villagers and grief over lost love becomes more appealing as the story develops. An American enduring Irish cold and dearth of conveniences tests credibility a little.

Great Read!
I really enjoyed this story and the performance, which were well matched. The author made me feel as though I was there - a member of the village.
