Publisher's Summary

Northamptonshire, 1810: As a new canal network snakes across the landscape, a vicious mob stakes its claim to the county. Every local constable is out on the hunt for the ruthless Panther Gang. When an elderly man is robbed and murdered in sleepy Middleton, the beleaguered magistrates send for help from London's Bow Street Police Office.

Detective Stephen Lavender and Constable Ned Woods soon discover there's more to William Sculthorpe's demise than meets the eye. Mystery surrounds the old man and his family, and the stench of revenge hangs heavy in the air. Are the Panther Gang really responsible or is something more sinister afoot? As Lavender delves further into long-hidden secrets, Woods has demons of his own to contend with: ghosts from his past that stalk him through the investigation.

Uncovering decades of simmering hatred and deceit, Lavender and Woods must use all their wit and cunning to solve this evil crime.

Based in historical fact

I've read or listened to all of this series and enjoyed each one. Carefully plotted and painstakingly accurate in period detail, this is a wonderful example of first class historical fiction with great murder mystery plot.

This series just keeps getting better!

Where does The Sculthorpe Murder rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Lots of twists and turns with great characters. I've read all three available books and the series just keeps getting better. Looking forward to the next book.

Love the Lavender series!

So interesting and exciting! I loved all the subplots and the way the puzzle fell into place with all of them at the end. I can't wait for the next one to come out as an audiobook!

Superb narration

From Karen Charlton's first book, The Heiress of Linn Hagh, I've become a big fan. Her stories are actually drawn from real historical events. The writing transports me to the book's time period, 1810. Additionally, the narration was superb! I look forward to the next book in the Detective Lavender series.

I'm A Fan!

Loved this one the most so far. Can't wait to read the next one. Very smart and very funny - and I'm learning that there's a lot more to Regency England than Jane Austen would have you believe!

OK...a lot of busi ness

It was a long and complicated case for Lavender and Woods in Northants in 1810. I am not sure if it was as good as previous cases they have had to solve, but I did not feel it was as compelling. The victim was an unsavoury character whose death evoked no sympathy and so I did not care if his murder was solved or not. Woods and Lavender poked their noses into the doings of the community and opened up a can of worms, gradually pulling together the threads to make a picture or three, uncovering puzzle after puzzle.

Unfortunately I took a dislike to the narrator so things were not helped along there as I felt he did not give a true picture of characters including Lavender. Woods he made a better job of, but the voice was a detraction from quite a cast of characters

Good

Not as good as first book on the series. Still worth listening but a little slow in places. Seek out first book if you want to be really entertained.

Enjoyable old fashioned detective story

This is the fourth novel in the series I've listened to and, like the others, found it an intriguing and well-plotted story. Well-rounded characters, especially Inspector Lavender and his side-kick Ned Woods. The postscript to the book tells how the story has some basis in fact, but has been embellished by the author to make the outcome neater.

The narrator is very good.

Love these books

The author has produced a selection of well written books that has kept me on the edge of my seat and made me laugh. The narrator has complimented her writing perfectly. Really bringing the characters to life. But if you’ve come to this book first I would advise you read book 1 so that you can really get to know the main characters and their lives.
