Publisher's Summary

A brand-new, unabridged recording of Baroness Orczy's classic tale of adventure, read by Julian Rhind-Tutt.

Paris, 1792. The Terror has begun. Every day, scores of the French nobility are delivered to the guillotine. Trapped in the capital, they have no way of escape.

But rumours abound of a league of young English gentlemen who are risking their lives to spirit French aristocrats away to safety across the Channel. Led by a man known only as the 'Scarlet Pimpernel', they leave no trace behind them save a single note.

Determined to stop them, ruthless spymaster Chauvelin travels to England and embarks on a quest to uncover the identity of their leader, forcing the Scarlet Pimpernel and his men to summon all their courage and wits to evade capture and stay alive.

Critic Reviews

"Julian Rhind-Tutt sounds as if he's having as much excitement as the Scarlet Pimpernel in this classic adventure novel, which means that listeners do, too.... Rhind-Tutt offers expansive vocal studies of the central figures and quick sketches of the passersby. His voice is melodious, and his pacing suits the tempo of the scene, be it love or chase." Really great narration

There are so many audio versions of the Scarlet Pimpeenel that it can be hard to choose one from so many options. I'd tell you to look no further with this one. crisp dialog with distinct voices for different characters and the appropriate amount of cadence and inflection for each joke or tone makes this a very enjoyable read.

The Scarlet Pimpernel

This is very well done, though I prefer the one Narrated by Stephen Crossly. I would say both are very well done, and whom you prefer to read depends on the mood you are in.

Great narration of a favorite story!

Loved it! It was hard to put this one down, or rather, pause it! The narration was great. And the story has been a favorite for a long time. The only part that bothered me was the pronunciation Chauvelin, but everything else was perfect! I love the narrator's voice and his voice for each character. made it easy to keep up and follow along and understand who was talking.

Superb

Worth ten years of output of modern literary production - and more. Delightfully reactionary, subtle, well written and beautifully presented.

Great Book, Almost Perfectly Narrated

Love the book, and the narration was great, though there were a couple of places where it could be *more* perfect. ;) Overall, an excellent listen.

Great performance, enjoyable adventure story.

Far-fetched but fun, despite repetition throughout (the hero definitely had long legs and an inane laugh, you can be sure of that). However, Julian Rhind-Tutt's narration was spot on; his various accents were brilliant and really lifted the story.

One of the legends of British literature

Initially read at the age of 11, now re-read many years later and still much enjoyed. The first of Baroness Orczy’s books that created the legend of the Scarlet Pimpernel (le Mouron Rouge) the quintessential English aristocrat who, by means of subterfuge and disguise, frees French aristocrats from the guillotine, hidden behind a mask that keeps his identity a secret from all. Club land hero with a difference. An elegant Bulldog Drummond. An honourable Arsène Lupin. A wonderful book beautifully produced and read for Audible.

Great fun, beautifully read

I had read and loved this book as a child but I had forgotten what a rollicking romantic romp it is. It's great fun, with a cliffhanger at the end of every chapter, and it's perfectly read by Julian Rhind-Tutt, who gives it the enthusiasm and gusto it deserves. I'll be listening to this one again!

Great narration!

Took a while to get into this book but once my interest was gained I really enjoyed it. A love story in an age where more things were left unsaid than said.

Excellent rendition of this Classic

I have had several versions of this favourite in my WIsh List for years, but never really liked the audio sample narration.

I saw this recently, was not familiar with the narrator but felt he would be the 'right' voice. I was not disappointed - what an excellent job he did. So if you are familiar with this novel by Baroness Orczy, you'll love this narration.

Saved by the narrator!

A creaking plot with many overblown and dubious passages but nevertheless the intelligent, brisk narration of Julian Rhind-Tutt carries the story along in compelling fashion and makes it a fun listening experience, though not one I would want to listen to again.

A swashbuckling delight.

Such an atmospheric tale, expertly narrated and brought to life by Julian Rhind-Tutt. This is a favourite of mine and the characters are wonderfully voiced. A novel of its time but also a tale of great male and female bravery.

A Classic, Well Performed

Not much more to say really. A quintessential foundation of the original genre, this book speaks for itself in terms of intrigue and excitement.

Rhind-Tutt brings it to life well, adopting well constructed characterisations to deliver a performance befitting this classic.
