Publisher's Summary

It's not just a game when you're running for your life.

Every night they tuned in to the nation's favourite prime-time TV game show. They all watched, from the sprawling slums to the security-obsessed enclaves of the rich. They all watched the ultimate live death game as the contestants tried to beat not the clock but annihilation at the hands of the Hunters.

Survive 30 days, and win the billion-dollar jackpot - that was the promise. But the odds were brutal and the game rigged. Best score so far was eight days. And now there was a new contestant, the latest running man, staking his life while a nation watched.

That ending....

Early King books are some of my favorite. The running man is not as gripping as I would of liked but the story is smooth and the reading is clear and on point.

WARNING: THERE IS A SPOLIER RIGHT AT THE START.

Overall I liked the book but the Author's note at the start have away the ending. What the heck!? Just a warning to skip if you haven't read the book before.

Great thrilling book

Skip the first part of this book because it tells you the ending
Besides that it's a gripping tale that will have you on the edge of your sit longing for the next chapter

DO NOT LISTEN TO CHAPTER 1

I liked the book well enough, but the ending is completely spoiled by the Forward (chapter 1), skip straight to chapter 2 which is the start of the book. Listen to the Forward at the end instead, otherwise the ending falls completely flat as there's zero element of surprise or suspense. The Forward is also confusing as King says The Running Man was written as a Bachman version twin of Desperation, however I didn't see any similarities at all. I've later found out that The Regulators is the twin, so I have no idea what King is on about in this Forward, it should just be removed.

Not a fan of the writing

Firstly, as other reviews have also mentioned, Stephane King ruins the ending in his introduction. Chapter 1 should be moved to the end as an afterword. Go straight to chapter 2 (which is the beginning of the actual book).

The story idea is great and I’m a big fan of dystopian futures but the writing left a bad taste in my mouth. It’s vile and almost feels racist at times.

Brutal, furious and totally un-Hollywood

Amazing story, part Orwell, part Phillip K Sick. Terrifying, angry and very sad. Narration was on point: none of the accents felt overdone or hammed up. Could not have enjoyed it more.
