About this listen

Luxury villas on hot white sand, views for miles over turquoise water.
Flawless hostess Penny gathers guests to an island for her husband’s birthday celebrations.
But she soon regrets inviting self-obsessed Eloise…

When a child vanishes on the night of the party, their perfect island weekend is ripped apart. Even paradise harbours murky secrets…
Has he been taken? Has he drowned?

In the panic to find any trace, Penny casts about for someone to blame—even if that person is her own daughter, Rosie. Even clear waters descend to pitch black…

But it’s not the first time Rosie’s been attacked by her mother. And it’s not the first time she’s turned to Eloise for support.

As the sun beats down and dark secrets rise to the surface, can they find the missing child before it’s too late—or will this sudden disappearance endanger them all? …and someone among them knows the whole shocking truth

I thought midway through the book that when two of the characters figured out what was happening and then worked together to get the little boy back that this was a mis-direction and there would be an "ah hah" moment right at the end so I kept waiting for that. It never happened, But then the ending was perfect, right at the last few sentences. Excellent book.

I kept waiting for the misdirect, but the ending was perfect. Great narration too.

The story seemed like it might have the power to intrigue me...
However, the main characters lacked redeeming qualities. Performed well, it was worth a listen, but I was left unsatisfied, seemed to me the further into the plot we ventured, the less I liked the main characters. I get the need to write 'flawed' protagonists, but flaws should be qualities that the reader may empathise with. Maybe the author was going for 'edgy', I don't know, but I would not want to be friends with either of the leading ladies... Just as I felt I could get on board with some of their behaviours, forgive some misgivings, something else would occur or come to light, and I was ... No, just no - that's not excusable or acceptable.

I'll make sure to read reviews before I purchase another by this author.

Will The Rip be a worthy force?

It’s a shame the author felt that I needed a welcome to my own country. If it had of been at the beginning of the book I wouldn’t have bothered reading it.

This was a good read

I loved the plot and characters but I struggled to like the two main characters. They both sounded rich and living in a bubble. Aside from that it's a good story about people wanting and needing love and validation, wanting to hide and forget poor choices of the past and doing anything to protect the good in their lives.

I liked hearing about holiday life on Rottnest Island and it's beautiful landscape and it made me want to visit but I recently watched a documentary which told the story of one side of the island being a prison for hundreds of First Nation people, for petty crimes, while the other side of the island was for holidaying. Hundreds of prisoners never left and died there. It's another awful story of Australia's history. It would have been good to hear a reference about this in the book as I thought it was just a regular gorgeous island.

An intriguing story

This is the second of Holly Craig’s books I’ve read and both captured my attention at the gecko. Quick paced, very original story line and story telling. Wonderful descriptive text, making it real and you’re right there experiencing the hot humid weather and sand,
The RIP and The Shallows are well worth the read
