Publisher's Summary

Random House presents the unabridged downloadable audiobook edition of The Restless Dead by Simon Beckett, read by Jonathan Keeble.

Composed of over 60 percent water itself, a human body isn't naturally buoyant. It will float only for as long as there is air in its lungs before gradually sinking to the bottom as the air seeps out. If the water is very cold or deep, it will remain there, undergoing a slow, dark dissolution that can take years. But if the water is warm enough for bacteria to feed and multiply, then it will continue to decompose. Gases will build up in the intestines, increasing the body's buoyancy until it floats again.

And the dead will literally rise....

Once one of the country's most respected forensics experts, Dr David Hunter is facing an uncertain professional - and personal - future. So when he gets a call from Essex police, he's eager for the chance to assist them.

A badly decomposed body has been found in a desolate area of tidal mudflats and saltmarsh called the Backwaters. Under pressure to close the case, the police want Hunter to help with the recovery and identification.

It's thought the remains are those of Leo Villiers, the son of a prominent businessman who vanished weeks ago. To complicate matters, it was rumoured that Villiers was having an affair with a local woman. And she, too, is missing.

But Hunter has his doubts about the identity. He knows the condition of the unrecognizable body could hide a multitude of sins. Then more remains are discovered - and these remote wetlands begin to give up their secrets….

With its eerie, claustrophobic sense of place, viscerally authentic detail and explosive heart-in-mouth moments, The Restless Dead offers a master class in crime fiction and marks the stunning return of one of the genre's best.

Enjoyable with good twist

Great plot, well read. But please it isn't RHIB. It's 'Rib'. Drove me a bit frantic as it was said so many times. Ask a sailor next time

Very Enjoyable

I listened to the whole book in one day because I quickly became engrossed in the story. It was well read and well paced. It is my first book by this author but I am now keen to discover more of his books.

My first time with Simon Beckett

This was the first book of Simon Beckett’s that I had listened to. Beautiful narrated by Jonathan Keeble. Very engaging plot with lots of twists and turns. I really liked that in the end the reader gets closure on all aspects of the plot. Will definitely be seeking out more of his books.

Lots of twists and turns

This was a well crafted story, it certainly kept my interest. Lots of twists that I didn't expect. I was pleasantly surprised as I have made some awful choices recently. I will get another in this series as I rather like Dr Hunter and the story was intelligent and gripping.. Nicely read by Jonathon Keeble

Hard going

the story is convoluted in technical details about dead bodies etc, does not generate suspense at all and if you know the other stories in the series, some resemblances. It’s read v well by J Keeble.

edge of your seat listening

One of the best books I've read /listened to. I enjoy crime with some forensics. But Simon Beckett puts some much scientific detail around a gripping story he is in a class of his own.

Latecomer to this series

This is he first of the Dr David Hunter books I've read but even as such a latecomer I was able to follow this book and his story very well.. I tend to avoid series as I find they get stale very quickly for me especially series set in the uk. However, This s story was excellent. I genuinely was hooked by the storyline and he very smooth narration. The he voices the narrator used really enhanced he story. It ended on a cliff hanger and despite disliking series, especially those set in uk, I will definitely be looking for the next instalment of Simon Beckett's Dr David Hunter books! I may even get the previous ones too and that's quite an accomplishment for Mr Beckett.

This had more twists and turns than a mountain road. Totally absorbing and very difficult to take my earphones out when I got to work. ...I just wanted to keep listening!!
