Publisher's Summary

He’s a man with a body under siege - and the willingness to proceed with a cure so miraculous all one can do is gasp - in this chilling story by New York Times bestselling author Adam Haslett.

After years of traditional treatments and therapies, Derrick still suffers from pain ineluctable enough that it has become his identity. Then he hears of an exclusive, very private New York clinic that promises relief. It comes highly recommended by a friend. The multisession remedy unfolds as a sensorial wonder that’s so illuminating it’s enough to bring tears to Derrick’s eyes. It’s all working so well. So unexpectedly well.

Adam Haslett’s The Remedy is part of Dark Corners, a collection of seven heart-stopping short stories by bestselling authors who give you so many new reasons to be afraid. Each story can be read in a single sitting. Or, if you have the nerve, you can listen all by yourself in the dark.

Okay story; good narrator

I thought the story itself was 'okay'. The narrator was good, though, and it was an enjoyable enough story that kept me interested while I had my lunch.

Truth, just plain truth

I think that if you live with chronic pain, then you get it and you don’t need it explained. When I say chronic pain, I mean lifelong (like rheumatoid arthritis) or perhaps even medically induced or necessary (like chemo therapy pain, which is a roller coaster of ongoing torture). If you don’t live (or haven’t lived) with continuous pain, then this might be difficult for you to understand. I found this to be an honest account, that rings true. If you no someone who is suffering from ongoing pain, and you want to know how to interpret that pain and their feelings, this might help.

Unusual story.

Unusual story, not bad for a quick read. The ending was quite different then I thought it might be.

Narrator had a nice voice

And the story was a good short tale. In someways the ending was expected but at the same time a nice twist.

Not horrifying so much as unbelievable

The ending isn't a big surprise. Not sure if the author was trying to be scary and failed, or pulled an inept bait-and-switch. The titular "Remedy" is about what I was expecting, and COULD have been handled in a way that seems like a reasonable solution to chronic pain on a case-by-case basis. But doing it without clearly informed consent is an ethical nightmare, and the idea that this keeps happening at the same facility without anyone noticing anything suspicious destroys all suspension of disbelief.

The Remedy

The story was interesting, I was never bored, but I was confused. I liked the writing, but the ending three me. I wouldn't recommend it.

Good short story

This was nice to pass an hour away. I don’t regret listening to it, but wouldn’t say it was anything remarkable. It was free and included in my Amazon Prime Reading options. I will try the rest of the series since they are short.

Pretty good.

This was a decently-executed short story with enough happening to where I didn't feel the need to shut it off. There are a few short stories that take over half the length to get anything described. This was definitely not like that; now, I'm not going to say it was a perfect short story, because it definitely wasn't. I did, however, completely enjoy myself for this short read. The narration was great! So, the story will get a B from me and the narration will get a A-.
