Tantalizing & Intriguing

This book is well-written and flows - the mystery and intrigue keeps you on edge throughout the book. Following the Russian names can be a little challenging at times , but the overall premise and storyline keep you engaged. I listened to the audiobook and was impressed with Marton York's delivery. He was very consistent in the various voices needed in this book as there were several characters.

I found this book to be very entertaining and would highly recommend. Sometimes, things are not what they appear to be...

Good Enough

The basic foundations of this story - former spy/assassin retired trying to get on with new life is brought back into their old life. Old nemesis is involved and the Russian mafia are the villains. There is decent character development using mostly flashbacks for our protagonist Jame Ryker and the Red Cobra. The story isn't all that compelling; it certainly isn't one to keep you up listening past your bedtime. I did find from time to time the stupid actions of the supposed smart, top predator, in control James Ryker irritating. This is not Orphan X, Jack Reacher, The Grey Man, Mitch Rapp, John Rein ... who are all 5 star stories rather this is a solid 3 and maybe 4. Worth a listen? Yes good enough but if you want top notch try one of the series mentioned previously. Narrator does an adequate job. The English accents aren't consistent. At times a character has a thick English accent at other times it is barely noticeable. And for something that takes place in Spain - no one had a Spanish accent, not even the locals.

Lackluster

Fun listen

I liked the story it moved at a fun pace. Had to get use to the voices but that is the case with a lot of audio books. If you like action a good plot you’ll enjoy this book.

Snake Bite!

I guess some of us can never have too many rugged, super-skilled ex military / secret agent tough guys in our lives. I tend to devour the Reachers and Pullers of this world and it seems I've found another one in James Ryker. He's a man who is drawn back to his shadowy and violent past when an unresolved situation from his past rises up again. The book is very fast-paced and cleverly structured such that both Ryker and the Red Cobra are unveiled as characters with their separate stories.

There were some things that just struck me as a bit unrealistic but the key ones ended up being explained well including how the Red Cobra gained such deadly and stealthy skills. In truth this is very much a sit back, don't think too much, grab some popcorn and relax book. However, it is very enjoyable and I really did like how the author pulled all the strings together at the end. This appears to be Marston York's debut on Audible UK and he does a fine job, I would happily listen to him again.

All in all this was enjoyable and the time I spent listening to it passed by very quickly. If you're looking for a thriller with a lot of depth or one that doesn't rely on the characters showing a bit of inconsistency then it might not suit you. However, it is an entertaining and violent thriller with some neat twists and plenty of action. Good enough for me to follow the series going forwards.

Weak plot line. Characters seem to be superhuman

Characters seem to be superhuman one second and then easily overcome the next. But by halfway through you will no longer care

Good start to the follow up series.

Good start to the second series. Using a different narator helps separate the these series of books from a Andy McNab's Nick Stone.
