Publisher's Summary

This brilliant new audiobook explores the lives of eight generations of the greatest kings and queens that this country has ever seen, and the worst. The Plantagenets - their story is the story of Britain.

England’s greatest royal dynasty, the Plantagenets, ruled over England through eight generations of kings. Their remarkable reign saw England emerge from the Dark Ages to become a highly organised kingdom that spanned a vast expanse of Europe. Plantagenet rule saw the establishment of laws and creation of artworks, monuments and tombs which survive to this day, and continue to speak of their sophistication, brutality and secrets.

Dan Jones brings you a new vision of this battle-scarred history. From the Crusades to King John’s humbling over Magna Carta and the tragic reign of the last Plantagenet, Richard II, this is a blow-by-blow account of England’s most thrilling age.

Brilliant

The perfect balance of detail and anecdotes to bring alive the history of the Plantagenets while answering questions of how events fitted together, discounting some myths and clarifying others, leaving you with a more coherent understanding of the period

Brilliant Enlightment

I had heard of the White Ship, I remembered being fascinated by the late 70s TV drama 'The Devil's Crown' (on the back of which my daughter's names include Eleanor), I loved The Daughter of Time and knew of the York and Tudor struggles called The Wars of the Roses. However, the wealth of information provided by the author in this book, closely followed by listening to the next instalment in the saga, The Hollow Crown, have broadened my knowledge immensely, and spectacularly brought the players and the period to life. Dan Jones' research and scholarship, complemented by his skills in narrating his works have made listening a delight. I will now start over!

Rollicking English history

Well researched, well written and well read. Dan Jones finds the balance between historical accuracy and juicy melodrama in this history of the Plantagenet dynasty. Would highly recommend to anyone.

Sweeping narrative

Well worth listening to, although at times it reads like a battle by bloody battle. Very much a man’s history of men, with women only rarely rating much of a mention in passing.
The most irritating feature was some fluctuation in volume on the part of the reader, hence a low rating there.
What a fascinating and varied lot the Plantagenet kings were. I definitely learned a lot, with the whys brought out, not just the facts.

Brilliant content & writing

The Plantagenets are fantastic content for anyone who loves history. So much action & so many memorable characters! Dan Jones does a compelling and thorough job covering this topic and making the most of this fascinating House’s history. One of my favourite voices to listen to; a calm constant tone, yet delivers enough inflection to keep great interest. History buffs will not be disappointed, those new to historical non fiction will love it too.
