Jacob “Stumpy” Smith leaves the relative safety of a wagon train to stake a claim on the southeastern Colorado prairie—and nearly dies for the mistake. With game scarce and winter merciless, he freezes and starves until he and his horse collapse at the ranch of John Wesley Prowers.
Prowers takes him in, gives him work, and outfits him with the supplies he needs to survive. Within a week, Prowers and his Indian housemaid are dead, the ranch safe emptied, and two newly hired hands gone.
Bound by gratitude and driven by a hard sense of frontier justice, Stumpy tracks the killers to Trinidad, Colorado, where he settles accounts with one man. The other escapes.
The pursuit that follows carries Stumpy across hundreds of miles and more than three weeks of unforgiving country, ending in San Angelo, Texas—where vengeance proves more complicated, and more dangerous, than he ever imagined.
In one of life’s ironies, Jacob finds the beginnings of a new life and a renewed sense of purpose.
