About this listen

Read by Kristin Atherton, Roy McMillan, Clare Corbett, Tom Bateman, Patience Tomlinson & Shaheen Kahn.

From author of THE ONE - now a major Netflix series - and THE FAMILY EXPERIMENT!

Eight self-drive cars set on a collision course. Who lives, who dies? You decide.

A gripping page-turning thriller for fans of BLACK MIRROR from the bestselling author of THE ONE.

When someone hacks into the systems of eight self-driving cars, their passengers are set on a fatal collision course.

The passengers are: a TV star, a pregnant young woman, a disabled war hero, an abused wife fleeing her husband, an undocumented immigrant, a husband and wife - and parents of two - who are travelling in separate vehicles and a suicidal man. Now the public have to judge who should survive but are the passengers all that they first seem?

'Provocative, terrifying and compulsive. Another savagely clever near future thriller' Cara Hunter, bestselling author of CLOSE TO HOME

'A 1970s disaster movie by way of Black Mirror, with a dash of Michael Crichton ... a sleek, exhilarating ride' Financial Times

"One of the most exciting, original thriller writers out there, I never miss one of his books." - Simon Kernick

I find John’s books are unique stories, stretching what could one day be. The characters were interesting and the interlinking connections complex.

Loved it! Original, complex and interesting characters

This is the 4th of John Marrs books that I’ve listened to - each one has been stranger than the last without actually challenging credulity. They paint scenarios that are freakishly plausible from where we are now. The plots are also tense, fast paced and mostly unpredictable. Only the language itself is a little dull and that is why I haven’t given this book the full five stars. Marrs often falls back onto cliched phrases as though he is moving so fast that he doesn’t have time to find his own words for things. It’s a shame, but it won’t stop me listening to more - maybe just interspersed with richer writing. All Marrs’ imagination seems to be poured into his story lines - and they are rippers!

Marrs’ plots are a-mazing

I read The One first and loved it and pretty much went straight on to this, I’m glad I listened to the Audiobook because the performances were excellent and I really enjoyed the addition of the news reports, social media notification noises etc.
The story and characters were very engaging, I really loved the ending too.

Excellent!

Some people said they couldn’t keep the characters straight. There are about 5-6 pairs of characters- at first. Just know this and you’ll easily remember. After an hour it all becomes clear- it’s another clever, intertwined futuristic, tech gone wrong story - playing on both our hopes for the future and our fear of the future. My only regret was the ending - I love a wound up end. This is not a dangler but somewhere in between dangling and resolution. Loved it.

fantastic, thrilling, thoroughly enjoyed the twisting in the stories. as predictable as the ending could be it was amicably justified..

I love finding psychological suspense novels that aren’t scary. I’m also really enjoying this author

Disturbing but quite the page turner!

Something a little different and I loved it. An amazing story where everything just fell in to place at the end. Great assumption of something that is likely to become reality in the not too distant future. Excellent themes and especially what can happen in an AI world. Thanks Mr Maars for this great story.

Great book
