Publisher's Summary

She’s a total stranger. But she knows who you are....

Suzi did a bad thing. She’s paying for it now, pregnant, scared, and living in an isolated cottage with her jealous husband, Nick.

When Nora moves into the only house nearby, Suzi is delighted to have a friend. So much so that she’s almost tempted to tell Nora her terrible secret. But there’s more to Nora than meets the eye. It’s impossible - does she already know what Suzi did?

Meanwhile, Elle spends her days in her perfect home, fixated on keeping up appearances. But when her husband betrays her, it unravels a secret going all the way back to her childhood. She’ll do whatever it takes to hold on to him, even if that means murder. After all, she’s done it before....

Caught up in their own secrets and lies, these strangers will soon realise they have more in common than they could ever have imagined. When a shocking event brings them together, their lives will never be the same again.

Confusing Narration, Drawn Out Story

NO SPOILERS! This book is very hard to understand who is speaking. Characters shift in the middle of chapters without an introduction and its very annoying. The story is so so but its more of a mystery drama.

The Other Wife is not what you think

Claire McGowan has written a primer on how to “gaslight” someone. Susie’s husband nIck distrust his wife after finding her caught in an affair. Having “forgiven“ her he unbeknownst to her monitors her every move. Moving her out of London into a remote area, Susie, now pregnant, is left alone during the day with no one around until a woman moves into one of the other cottages next-door.

Nora is the new neighbor. She is also the widow of Susie‘s lover. Thinking the child she carries is her husbands, NORA begins a campaign to ingratiate herself with Susie. Finding that NIck has been controlling Susie’s every move via electronic monitor, Nora, while not telling Susie, she encourages her to leave Nick,

NORA, thinking she would have a comfortable life with pensions, savings, and inheritance money, is rudely awakened by the lawyer who tells her there are no funds whatsoever. Her husband has been siphoning off funds for years and there’s nothing left.
Things escalate and there are many twists and turns. It makes you wonder how well you know those people in whom you have placed trust and love. This was a good read and the audio version was brilliantly performed.

4.5 Stars

Let me start by making it extremely clear that the ONLY reason this wasn't a full 5 star book for me was because it took a little while for me to really get into the groove of the book BUT once I did boy was I hooked! This was my first Claire McGowan book, and DAMN was I pleased!

I went in thinking I had it pegged from the title. Thought I was gonna be in for a simple story about a man with multiple wives who maybe became obsessed with the other. You know I conjured this from my non-existent background of thrillers. But what I got was a mouth watering, emotionally driven, domestic psychological ride filled with suspense, and angst. The book literally had me screaming at it by the end. It kept me guessing, incorrectly might I add, the whole time as I sopped up all the juicy details.

Over the course of the novel we follow multiple female POVs, the main ones being Suzi, Elle, and Nora, that this story revolved around. It took a while to get used to hearing from so many different voices, but as the story progressed I got the importance of hearing each woman's side of the story. You could easy relate to all of them, and though there were many times during the book I wanted to take them aside and give them a good talking to. They grew on me, and helped me connect to the story in a way I never thought possible.

The Other Wife is the complete anomaly providing a slow burn sensation in a fast paced novel. McGowan definitely knows her way around character development and a gripping story line. I am excited to read more of her work.

Slow start but a fabulous suspense thriller!

I almost gave up on this book about 30% in, because it started out so very slow and it was hard to keep me interested... but I’m so glad I didn’t give up! At about 39% the story started to get really good and picked up the pace, and I found myself not wanting to stop listening. Told from three points of view: Suzie, Nora, and Elle, this was a well written and unique story. You really have to pay attention so you don’t get confused who is who.

So full of suspense and twists once it got into the secrets of the characters. This is the third book I’ve read by Claire McGowan and I love her writing and story telling skills. She has now become one of my favorite authors for mystery/suspense/thriller (could fall into the domestic suspense genre as well).
The only reason I gave a 4 instead of 5 stars is because it was so slow to start. I read the kindle version and bought the audible version so I could listen when I was unable to read. Totally one credit worthy and great narration. I highly recommend to anyone who enjoys a good suspense thriller.
