Publisher's Summary

From the best-selling author of the Bright Side series comes a thought-provoking, eye-opening story about the complexity of family, the devastation of loss, the destruction of depression, and the unequivocal power of kindness and perspective. An Amazon Top 50 best seller, The Other Side is a stand-alone novel.

There are two sides to every story. The surface reality that’s presented to the world. And then, there’s the other side. The real one. The one that matters.

Seventeen-year-old self-proclaimed asshole Toby Page is alone. No friends. No family. He trades maintenance work in exchange for room and board.

Every day, he fights demons no one else can see. Every day, he wants to give up. But he can’t. Not yet. When Alice Eliot moves in downstairs, she offers Toby some light in his dark world.

At a crossroads and barely hanging on, it’s hard to have perspective. It’s difficult to see your own worth when you’re the villain in your story. Luckily for Toby, Alice brings things out in him that no one else ever has.

As the two sides of Toby’s story are revealed, and the full reality comes into view, truth is gained, unlikely heroes emerge, and improbable alliances prove that kindness is fundamentally human.

The question is: Will it all be enough to save him?

The audiobook is produced by One Night Stand Studios.

Praise for the book:

"With grace, care, honest words, and a hopeful message, Holden has woven a story that will sit in your soul and has the power to make so many of us feel less alone. A must-read for young and old alike.” (Ginger Scott, best-selling author)

✫✫ 10 Stars ✫✫

I want to give this book 10 stars! For me this book hit home in a completely different way than I think it will most people. I expect to see a lot of comments from people who know the way Toby felt in this book but I am the opposite. I don't know this feeling and find I am sometimes unsympathetic toward people because I don't understand it but this book showed me and explained to me how someone can seem one way and feel a different way inside. I needed that lesson!

Toby's story is heartbreaking but it is also uplifting and eye opening. This book will hit all of your emotions.

Part 1 - Toby's side of the story. You get to spend most of this book in Toby's head and are introduced to many people in his life, some important and some just passing through (remember this is his side).

Part 2 -The Other Side of the story. In this part we learn so much about Toby from his interactions with others. Things look very different from the other side. This is the most powerful part of the book for me. So eye opening to realize what you see one way, others see completely different

Part 3- Reality! This is the hard part for me because everyone always knows what they should do but actually following through and being the changes you need to be is never easy. This for me was Toby's show of strength.

I loved Toby's story and his growth throughout this story even through the awful things. I loved how the author showed us that when someone seems ok it's not always real. We need to pay attention to what they don't say.

The dedications & author's notes were beautiful. Anyone who follows Kim Holden on Social Media knows that she is a sweet person who is ALL about kindness, lifting others and being the best person you can be for you and for others. In this book she showed people like me who don't have empathy that things aren't always what they seem and they aren't easy for everyone. This again is why I love her books! Every one of them has left a huge imprint on my heart and showed me how to be a better me!

The narration on this audiobook was PERFECT!!! Seriously this is proof that audiobook listening authors make the best audiobooks. The casting was perfect for every character, this is how you can tell that the author is a listener. There was not one thing about the narration that i would change. The best part for me was listening to Kim Holden narrate the author's notes. This made such a huge difference from hearing a narrator read it, this made it personal and made the story real.

The Other Side

I don’t know if I have the words to adequately review this book. This story is so relevant to everyone. It can show you your side, someone else side and the truth. It is one of those books that will have you seeing yourself in it whether that be as Toby, as the other side or as reality.

For me it was all three, I have been Toby in my teens, I have seen the other side, and the reality. This story is more than a story it gives a voice to so many in all the different ways.

Kim’s words at the end shows us just how real and important stories like these are. But also lets us know that you are NOT alone, there is something out there we just have to be brave enough to ask for it.

My favorite quote, (for me this is TRUTH) - “Volume doesn’t change minds, it closes them.”

Audiobooks like this are what make listing so enjoyable even with the subject matter is hard/heavy. Each narrator gives themselves over to that character. You feel the story you see the story. I wish we could thank each and every one of the narrators because they did a phenomenal job one this book.

To Kim for writing it, I thank you, you always seem to write the stories that will be with me for years to come. What a gift you have, thank you for sharing it with us all.

Beautifully written, carefully crafted, and timely, this is a book everyone NEEDS to read. Without giving too much away- the topics of mental health and depression are so very relevant. The narrators were perfectly chosen and added to the the story. All the stars for The Other Side!

so freaking good!

ok, so this review is not easy to write and to be honest I finished the book the days before writing this.... I listened to the audio and read along on kindle and am so happy I did. This story broke me, destroyed me; and then healed me. I was able to relate to this story in more ways than one so at times it got difficult but it was also comforting; reassuring me that I'm not alone in the struggle I live everyday.

An important read that will stay with you always

Kim Holden is synonymous with impactful writing. This lady takes time and care to write words that make you feel deep down in your soul.

The Other Side is not for the faint of heart. Even though the subject matter is hard to read at times, Ms. Holden has a poetic and beautiful way of bringing the ugly truth to light.

I felt Toby's pain deep in my soul, but even deeper Ms. Holden surrounded this character with secondary characters that brought light to his darkness.

There were many unexpected twists and surprises while reading that shocked, delighted and made me feel so overwhelmed with all the emotions at once that I didn't know if I'd ever have the right words to express how I felt.

I still don't think this review is nearly adequate enough. This books is not a light and fluffy read, but it IS an important piece of work that demands to be read. Jump in, meet Toby, Alice and the rest of the gang. You'll be so glad you did.

*Edit to Add: I listened to this book after I read the print version. I'm not usually a fan of multiple narratora for each character. It can get confusing, but it worked for The Other Side. If I thought this book was remarkable in print, it just jumped ten fold after listening to it!

A Beautiful, Emotional Story!!!

Who knew a story with such heavy and oftentimes, dark subject matter could be so beautifully written! The subject matter and characters are not roses and sunshine, but it is also a story of kindness and how one person can impact others' lives.

The main character is Toby, and I have never had a character make such an impression on me. He proclaims himself as a jerk, and he really has no friends or family. He lives in a home with other misfits and does maintenance in exchange for room and board. Every day he fights a darkness that no one else can see. At first glance, this is all you see. Yet, there is so much going on underneath the surface. The first part of the book is told in Toby's voice. I saw him through his own eyes, and he thinks he is nothing. But, that couldn't be further from the truth. When he meets Alice, she brings some light into his life, but is that enough to conquer the dark voices that haunt him?

The second part of the book is told from the perspective of others.

"There are two sides to every story. This is The Other Side of Toby's. The side that lends perspective. And changes everything." For me this changed so much...my heart was broken, but not in the way you might think. It broke that Toby could never see that other people saw him and saw him completely opposite of how he saw himself! This boy was goodness personified, yet he couldn't see it!!!!

The third part of the book is "when reality is introduced to the otherside." This is where Toby begins to ever so slightly mute the negative voices in his head, and where he will determine the next steps of his life.

I love reading, but I have to say listening to this novel, was an EPIC experience! The narrators packed such a punch. They captured every emotion I was feeling!!!!

The written word is special, but the spoken word can be life-changing. I hope that if someone is experiencing anything similar to Toby or the people he helps, that Kim Holden's own words will help them. I know she has made me change my thinking....kindness matters, we don't know the effect we can have on others' lives, and we don't know what others are going through. We need to really "see" one another!!!! Phenomenal book with a phenomenal message and and phenomnal cast of narrators!!!!!

An exceptional story and voiceover cast...

Just like the eBook edition was my introduction to Kim Holden's writing last year, the audiobook edition of The Other Side marked my first listen to anything she's penned, so it seemed rather fitting. This also had a cast of narrators, which isn't a first for me, but most of the audiobooks I listen to tend to have two narrators and that's followed by those with just one narrator. I confess that I was tad wary of the whole multiple voiceovers aspect of this audiobook because the last one that had more than two VOs wasn't a favorite of mine. However, I decided to take my chances because I absolutely fell in love with the story when I first read and was curious to see how it would translate as an audio.

The Other Side is a standalone young adult (YA) novel and it remains one of the most compelling stories of any genre that I've had the distinct privilege of experiencing as of late. Kim Holden doesn't give you a main character wrapped in shiny paper and bombards with you with reasons why they're the most awesome MC to grace the proverbial page. No, Toby Paige is far from perfect, and you won't hear me complaining becayse I don't look for perfection in my MCs. This seventeen-year-old was someone so compelling that I needed to know him beyond the facade that he presented the world. When eighteen-year-old Alice Eliot comes along, life as Toby knows it shifts in ways he never predicted.

Now, a story as compelling and magnificent as the one the author has written deserves an equally remarkable narrator. Except we get that times nine. This audiobook restored my faith in multi-narrator casts. Out of the nine, I'd only come across two of the narrators before. These voices blended exceptionally well together, meshing in a way that made me lean back in bed with my earphones on and it felt like I was part of a group of people sharing their story with me. This certainly isn't the first audiobook that's left me speechless and impressed, but it is the first that's had as many narrators as it did. I implore you to listen to The Other Side as soon as humanly possible. Five-plus stars multiplied by infinity. 🖤

A powerful, emotional story

I really enjoyed the way the narrators told this story! The way in which this story was told was unique and offered various insights into Toby's life. This was a heavy subject, but one so many people don't talk about. Depression is prevalent, but not the only thing that made up Toby. Despite his persona, Toby was a genuinely good person. Those closest to him saw that. He was caring and worried about others. He had a rough childhood and didn't let people in easily. This was a deep story but also so very sweet and you can feel the kindness of people in this book. This book took me on a journey that I wasn't expecting and made me feel for Toby. I swear, Kim Holden is the best human alive and the reader feels that through this story. I'm glad she told Toby's story and if you find yourself struggling, she offers a way to help. Don't let this story pass you by!

An addictive remainder to why Holden is the best.

This is not the first Kim Holden book that I have read/listened to, and so I kind of knew going into this that the book was going to probably throw me off a bit, but what what I wasn't prepared for was this complete ruination. This was 11 hours of pure unadulterated torture, because you kind of want time to go faster so that you can get to the end, and also don't.

It is purely maddening.

I think the one thing that was a little off-putting to me was the number of narrators, because I personally prefer one voice for the whole story, or two at most, so it did take a little while before I was able to get used to all the different voices. But other than that, this is what you call perfect.

I won't say anything else, lest I spoil the story for somebody. But to not read this would be a crime, let it be known.

An incredibly relevant and moving read!

This book was simply beautiful! Kim Holden has the power to bring you to your knees and really let you feel the depths of her characters and their struggles.

My heart ached for Toby the entire read. His character was so broken and distraught. He was just getting by, not living. His story, despite being set a little over 30 years ago, was still so relevant and current.

I absolutely adored all of the side characters and what they brought to not only the tale but to Toby’s life. They were all completely flawed but absolutely real.

Parts 2 and 3 were so eye opening and profound. I am so pleased that the author chose to write the story this way and take the reader on such an incredible emotional journey.

The ending of this book had me crying happy tears. There was nothing grand or spectacular about it, but it was exactly what you needed to finish this book feeling like everything was going to be okay.

This book was heavy! It touched on so many issues that plague those we love and care about. It was a fitting read for Mental Health Awareness Month!

The narration of this book by all performers was spectacular! I could envision each character and felt so much more connected to the story. I particularly loved Michael Crouch’s portrayal of Toby.

I received a complimentary audiobook from Wildfire Marketing in exchange for an honest review.

Poignant

As someone who's battled depression in the past, this book means a lot to me. It's thought-provoking and eye-opening. Not only does it tackle difficult topics, but it also shows how much we can affect other people's lives without even knowing it.

The narrators did a great job. I especially liked that it was the author herself was the one who narrated the author's notes.

The Other Side is a young adult romance written in multiple first-person POV. It's a standalone that deals with sensitive subjects some may find triggering and ends with an HEA. No cliffhanger.

I received this audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this unbiased review.

Was not ready for this journey

This isn't an easy book to review, I don't want to spoil anything. You should go to this blind because it's better! This one really touched me, triggered me even, but it's an emotional and truly heart breaking story. I don't think I will be ok after reading this for quite a while.

The Other Side is raw, realistic and heavy on a number of levels.

It's a must read and I'm sure once you read it you will think about it for days!

The Other Side was jam-packed with real issues and beautiful writing; it will make you think and it will make you cry. If you're interested in learning more about depression and trauma, I'd suggest this one.

A complimentary copy of the audio version of this book was provided to me for review. I volunteered to leave an unbiased review.

Emotionally charged!!

The Other Side is emotionally-charged… like it vibrates with emotions, with pain. This story hurts the heart like I haven’t experienced in a while. Kim Holden has a raw talent for cutting right to the heart of problems that people face when struggling with mental illness. The story is about 17-year-old Toby that is struggling in life and this story peruses his daemons, his problems. Every once and a while it’s good go get an emotional story that will leave your heart feeling as through the author rung it out. Kim Holden declares war on the heart, heck, on tissues! I obliterated them! The last 25% of this audiobook I sobbed like someone stole my cat!

This cast of narration was one the best I have ever listened too. I think I saw somewhere that the narration was referred to as an audiobook play. I can totally see that. This story was developed in such a way that they characters work together so fluidly. It’s an emotional and gritty story and when these voices all join in, this easily becomes an impactful story

Phenomenal

OMG...This book was unforgettable. Its a tale about the effects we can have on people's life even though we don''t know it. Its a tale that shows us that we have to listen and pay attention to those around us to hear what they're not saying and see what they're not showing us. This story was thought provoking and eye opening as it tackles difficult topics including depression, mental health, alcoholism, drug use, suicide, single parenthood and so much more. The story was heart-wrenching and will evoke so many emotions as the tale is told and it all unfolds. It will touch your heart in more ways than one and you will feel it all. This was 17 year old Toby's story and it was a realistic, raw and heavy story with some unexpected twists and turns. I was unable to put this book down. I loved it and would highly recommend it to everyone.
I listened to the audiobook version of this novel which was narrated by Michael Crouch, Natasha Soudek, Bahni Turpin, Kirby Hayborne, Adenrele Ojo, Graydon Long, Erin Spencer, Vikas Adams and Kim Holden. Each voice added a different personality to the characters. Michael Crouch as Toby was amazing. He embodied the character, perfectly capturing the emotions felt by Toby. The rest of the cast did a great job and together they all brought the story to life. This story was phenomenal and it was an absolute pleasure listening to these narrators.

Heartbreaking and Inspiring!

Toby has endured a life that no child should have to, and his experiences have left him damaged and without hope. All he wants is to be invisible as not only does he believe that he has no value but that he is unlovable. He has a plan in place for the future and his sole purpose is counting down the days until he can put it in place until Alice comes into his life.

Alice has moved into the building with her brother where he provides maintenance. She too has been hurt by what life has thrown at her but with the help of her brother she perseveres and still is able to see the good in everyone and everything.
Toby is determined to keep his distance from her like everyone else in his life, but she won’t let him. She sees beneath the detached demeanor that he shows to the world and sees the sensitive and sweet man that he hides but will she be able to convince him of that?

This is an emotional story that is both heartbreaking and inspiring which causes you to reflect the impact you have on other people’s lives even if you don’t realize it. I received a complimentary copy of the audiobook and it did an incredible job of bringing the emotion and angst of each of the characters to the forefront and made you feel like you were living the story with them.

What a story!

Something has to be said for an author taking on such realistic issues and creating a story that is so encompassing that it's hard to even put into words. Kim Holden has taken the life of Toby and let us see from different angles and views. Seeing the perspective of his life through his eyes has so many emotional pulls. It's depressing with so many realistic problems and it brings the heart wrenching grief. I found it difficult to connect with him at times, but my heart was heavy! Then part two seeing the different viewpoints of others is such a powerful listen. It is incredible the way way things are perceived and it gives a truthfulness to Toby's story that is so dynamic. Then add part three, which is reality and the story truly begins to hit home. Holden takes on the issues people don't want to talk about. Depression, drug and alcohol addiction, teenage pregnancy, and so many more and delves into lives so we can experience, understand and feel everything. I don't think many books have touched me the same way, and I know I will be looking for more of Kim Holden.

This narration team of Michael Crouch, Natasha Soudek, Bahni Turpin, Kirby Heyborne, Adenrele Ojo, Graydon Long, Erin Spencer, Vikas Adam, Kim Holden is incredible. Each voice adds a layer to the story with an inflection, an emotion, or a personality, It makes the story so real, and creates a feeling like it's actually happening to the listener. It was an amazing listen.

Amazing Story & Narration🎧Riveting & Heart-Rending

Kim Holden completely wowed me with this book, the story is realistic and grabs both your attention and your heart. It is a beautifully written story that is moving beyond words. The characters are realistic and easy to relate to, I felt like I knew Toby and what he was feeling and what he was going thru. I wanted to pull him out of the book, open his eyes show him he does not have to feel the way he did. Toby was beaten down in life that he got to the point of living for one thing, to prove he is smart to the one person who failed him, when he completed that goal he was ready to fulfill his next one. I love how this story was told, the majority of the first part “One Side of the Story” comes from Toby’s point of view, the majority spent in the present, occasionally flipping back to the past, 2 years earlier getting his view as Nina’s protector and we get some of Johnny’s view in the present as well. The second part “There are two sides to every story. This is the Other Side of Toby’s. The side that lends perspective. And changes everything” This part is brilliant, it brings in different points of views from people Toby met along the way, including Chantal, Cliff, which I loved and thought was brilliant. The third part, “When The Other Side is introduced to reality, lives change” brings us back to present day and what becomes of everyone, truths are reveals and lives are forever changed. I adored the secondary characters in this book, they played major support roles especially Alice, whom I admired, her brother was pretty awesome too. This is the type of story that will stay with me for a really long time, it is moving like no other and it shows you there is beauty everywhere you just have to look for it and if you can’t find it do not hesitate to reach out and get the help you need to find it. Kim Holden, thank you for another amazing book and the great notes you left in the book.

Michael Crouch, Natasha Soudek, Bahni Turpin, Kirby Heyborne, Adenrele Ojo, Graydon Long, Erin Spencer and Vikas Adam are wonderful narrators and voice artists, loved Kim Holden’s appearance and message as well. Michael Crouch’s portrayal of Toby was spot on, he captured Toby’s despair, hopelessness and anguish as he battled with his inner demons he also captured how much of a caring heart Toby had. The rest of the cast did a fine jobs covering their parts as well and delivered great performances. Thank you for this amazing listen🎧.
