Critic Reviews

"The Optician's Wife is a stylish, brilliantly crafted thriller which really delivers. A very real sense of creeping dread, combined with intelligent, finely drawn characters, had me turning the pages late into the night." (J. Ross, bestselling author of The DCI Ryan books)

What a Trip!

The Optician's Wife kept me enthralled from start to finish. This is a story of a couple- Deborah, a plain girl barely 18 with no expectations that life, or anyone, will treat her kindly, and Larry, a little older, an ambitious opticians apprentice who sweeps her off her feet- marrying, raising kids, and toughing out the hard times in life with, well, questionable entrepreneurial genius. Meanwhile, a creepy serial killer terrorizes the town owner the years, eventually throwing suspicion upon the family.
I enjoyed this book and it's been a long time since I read a story that is so unique and rather twisted with a plot so unexpected, driven by characters who are not particularly likeable in any sense of the word, but certainly morbidly curious- like you don't want to see something happening but you just can't stop yourself from looking! I particularly liked the couple's ingenuity earning money when Larry gets himself in trouble with a loan shark. You won't believe how Deborah evolves.
This book made me a big Betsy Reavley fan if only because I love the creativity that goes into writing this book! It's worth the credit and a great read, and I highly recommend it!

! Battered wife syndrome with a twist

Interesting is the word I would use for this book. I found that I kept reading just to see when/if Deborah would ever wake up and take control of her life. My next reaction was the incredulity that some women have when they turn off their common sense when it comes to men. I call that my “50 Shades of Grey” reaction.

Stupid women and their need for any man. There is nothing original in the book. Deborah is able to make any excuse to blame Larry’s sins on someone else, even her own daughter. She was scared in life with a low self-esteem and lack of any caring adult. Larry liberated something in her, therefore, it was very easy for her to relinquish control over to Larry.

He has a temper and lack of respect of women whom he defines as promiscuous. Early in the book you are told that Larry’s father, a teacher, made “improper” advances to a student. So, is being a sexual predator in Larry’s DNA. Is that his secret. The summary is misleading.

“As Deborah's world starts to fall apart, she begins to suspect the man she loves of a terrible betrayal”

That sentence leads you down a path which gives the ending more impact. You have to get to the ending to feel it was worth the credit. Is this book over rate from the reviews yes.

Was it a "psychological thriller" that kept me on the edge of my seat, no.

A Real Wow

Excellent, in-depth character study fueled by a tour-de-force reading by Beverly A. Crick. Even guessing the ending didn't put a damper on my enjoyment of this mesmerizing chronicle of the central character's mind. Very very impressive, multilayered, kept me glued to the end. Great read. If I say more I'll have to include spoilers.

Kept listening even though I guessed the ending

This book has memorable characters, and I enjoyed the twists and turns of the plot. However, I did figure out the ending, and the nature of the characters is such that you often want to take a shower to remove the feel of them from your skin. It's quite an accomplishment for a novelist to create such a work, but it wasn't really to my taste.

Depressing

Her book Frailty was much better. This book was depressing from the start. I kept hoping it would get better. Kept listening out of curiosity just to see if I was right about the ending. I was.

VERY OBVIOUS OUTCOMES

I felt that I had wasted my time, reading this book.
There were no surprises and no suspense at all!. Highly predictable on all accounts.
The best part of the story was the end ( I felt thankful! ) also a small amount of action and nastiness!

Slow burner, read if you have the patience.

This book is definitely a slow burner, it only gets interesting in the last couple of chapters which is a shame because the first chapters are excruciatingly mundane and drawn out, taking away from the entire experience. If you have the will power to put up with a voice that I can only explain as the worst sound I have ever heard for a couple of hours, you are in for a shock and a nice twisted surprise. I would definitely recommend it, just because of the twist that occurs.

Felt overrated except for the last chapter

The tone of the story is very monotonous. It started to dip towards chapter 40 and felt drawn out. The story would have been tastier if it was a tad bit more beefy.
I guess the way the narrative unfolds is the key to its appeal. The hints are spread through out the story which point to the twist in the tale. I'm in two minds actually, from one end it is a very interesting read and from the other very simplistic and monotonous.
I guess one can call it an interesting read.

Superb narrator

I had read this book first, and the narration here has Dee's character to absolute perfection. Some narrations are a big letdown, as if the reader is reading the book for the first time, but it's clear that the narrator spent a lot of time examining Dee's character. Congratulations to her - I wish all narrators were as thorough.
