Another brilliant novel
Absolutely love the two Peter’s work, hands down one of my favourite authors and narrators. This story is gritty, thrilling, devastatingly real and yet very compassionate. The pace, characters and Asian underworld made for addictive listening. You just get totally immersed into each of the many exotic locations and some very frightening situations, it’s like you are there with them, heart racing to boot! The accents as always brought each and every player into life. Thanks a million, please keep them coming!

Different yet enjoyable
Not a book I would normally listen to however I am glad that I made the choice. Author had a beautiful and clear voice (which can make or break a book). Storyline kept me interested and it was written in such a way that I could picture the environment in my mind. Ending was satisfying. The book was enjoyable enough that I would read more of Peter May's novels.

What’s new
A great and thought provoking read. Do we never learn? Refugees in their thousands , exactly what is happening today. Wealthy, ugly, malicious and corrupt people whose god is money. Frightened women and men with sad, fearful children all who have to flee their country because of war. People looking for peace , acceptance and a new life. Such atrocities still happening today. Do we never learn? As Jack thought love is better than hatred.

bit to warlike for me
I do like Peter May when he is writing the Enzo Mc Cloud and the China series, but this is nothing like those "comfortable stories. I am maybe a bit squeamish and I found this a bit too war torn for my liking. It is the story of a "soldier of fortune" aka mercenary who has taken the rap for what happened when he was a soldier in charge and things went horribly wrong. He was court marshalled and it ruined his marriage and his career and his relationship with his daughter. This story is about him trying to find a way forward after the death of the wife who turned his back on him, and for the daughter left behind to try and find him and get to know him. I did listen to the end, but I can't say it was a comfortable listen and I was glad when it ended. For me the moral of the story is ...........don't just use a credit on an author because you like a couple of his characters.

An extraordinary series of challenges
I loved the author's Island Trilogy but gave up series of stories set in China so wasn't sure if I'd like this novel with the background of the horrors of the Khmer Rouge regime in 1970s Cambodia. However, I did enjoy the book. It reminded me of the kind of story Frederick Forsyth writes with men involved in daring exploits and finding relief in the arms of beautiful women, but, where Forsyth fills his books with technical details about guns etc, Peter May, creates a great sense of the character's surroundings and the ambiance of the country in which the story is set. There are two strands to book: soldier of fortune, Jack Elliot, taking on an almost impossible task of getting a Cambodian family out of the country who are held in a camp guarded by Khmer Rouge soldiers and secondly the attempt by his daughter, Lisa, to find him when she discovers that he is not dead as her mother had claimed. The Jack Elliot strand is the more compelling I found Lisa's too unbelievable in all the terrible things that happened to her. I'm nit picking here but I felt the author used just too many similes to underlie a point when leaving the image to the readers imagination would have been better. Peter Forbes's narration is excellent as usual.
