Littleport, Maine, has always felt like two separate towns: an ideal vacation enclave for the wealthy, whose summer homes line the coastline; and a simple harbour community for the year-round residents whose livelihoods rely on service to the visitors. Wonderful story
- By Rani on 15-02-2021
Publisher's Summary
A captivating and magical story set in 1930s Malaysia about a dance-hall girl and an orphan boy who are brought together by a series of unexplained deaths and an old Chinese superstition about men who turn into tigers.
They say a tiger that devours too many humans can take the form of a man and walk amongst us....
In 1930s colonial Malaya, a dissolute British doctor receives a surprise gift of an 11-year-old Chinese houseboy. Sent as a bequest from an old friend, young Ren has a mission: to find his dead master's severed finger and reunite it with his body. Ren has 49 days, or else his master's soul will roam the earth forever.
Ji Lin, an apprentice dressmaker, moonlights as a dance-hall girl to pay her mother's debts. One night, Ji Lin's dance partner leaves her with a gruesome souvenir that leads her on a crooked, dark trail.
As time runs out for Ren's mission, a series of unexplained deaths occur amid rumours of tigers who turn into men. In their journey to keep a promise and discover the truth, Ren and Ji Lin's paths will cross in ways they will never forget.
Captivating and lushly written, The Night Tiger explores the rich world of servants and masters, ancient superstition and modern ambition, sibling rivalry and unexpected love. Woven through with Chinese folklore and a tantalizing mystery, this novel is a pause-resister of the highest order.

I think I would have enjoyed this more if I had of read it rather than listened to it as an audiobook. It took a long time for me to realise that each chapter were alternating characters and therefore it was hard to follow.
I’ll be reading this again, in book form.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book! The mystery and symmetry and the imagery were stimulating. The narrator was easy to listen to. I don't know if there is a second book or a series, but I will be keeping an eager eye out. There is certainly scope and set-up, enough, for it.

Good story, if you like everything tied up at the end this is for you!
Good start, then I wondered where it was all going, it meandered a little and I’m not sure whether the characters were developed enough to merit that.
However, about 1/2 to 2/3 through it really picked up again and I thoroughly enjoyed the plot right to the end.
Interesting too about Chinese culture and I thought the interplay between the living and the dead was really well done.
I would definitely recommend this book

Loved it.
This is a charming mystery set in 1931 Malaya. It follows the struggle of Ji Lin,Ren and Shin as they attempt to deal with an amputated finger. Along the way there is the occasional murder and visit to the netherworld. The main characters are delightful company and give clear explanations of the old Malay traditions and superstitions which are intriguing and highlight where the Night Tiger stories come from. It’s beautifully narrated by Yangtze Choo herself. At first I was startled by her aristocratic “cut glass” accent. But it quickly grew on me and her transfer to Tamil and other eastern languages was very effective. I can’t believe that the book narration could be bettered! A Very well spent credit. Treat yourself to a trip to old
Malaya, you won’t be disappointed.

Lovely concept but a bit obvious
I wonder if whether the author reading the book actually detracts away from some of the subtlety of the text.
The story itself is lovely, you can hear it has been written with the stage or screen in mind though

Interesting story but ending a bit disappointing
The story was very interesting and quite suspenseful. However, I thought the ending did not live up to the rest of the story. I felt a lot of ends were left loose and somehow the ending seemed rushed and inconsistent with tone of the remainder of the book.
