Publisher's Summary

When a murder suspect broke her back across a brick wall, Alisha Barba's dreams of being a detective were shattered. Now on her feet again, but with her career and private life in limbo, she receives a message from an old school friend, Cate Beaumont, who is eight months pregnant and in trouble.

On the night they arrange to meet, Cate is mown down by a car that kills her husband instantly. As paramedics fight to save her life, they uncover the first in a series of haunting and elaborate deceptions. They trigger a dangerous quest and as Alisha and her old boss, Detective Inspector Vincent Ruiz, travel deeper into a world of sex-trafficking, slavery, and exploitation, they must confront their own prejudices - and will come to question the very laws they have sworn to uphold.

annoying narrator

I have listened to many of Michael's books and loved the male narrator so it took me along time to get used to a female voice. I found it spoilt the book and I didn't en joy it as much as his other's.

another Robotham classic but not his usual fare.

Being a huge fan of the narration of Sean Barret, I initially struggled to start listening to anyone not Sean B, especially female, I am female and much prefer a male narrator.
only thing worse is a female Australian, and I am both, and yes a hypocrite!!
This was so unlike Robothoms usual crime style. Being a big fan of the unconventional hero Ruiz is always a treat.
All I can say, is try it, even without Sean B narrating. So different but twists and turns galore, never quite sure until the last few minutes!!!
Well worth devoting an afternoon or two.

Abriged to incoherent nonsense

I am a big fan of Michael Robotham and have listened to all other books by him available on audible. Unfortunately this one is only available in an abridged version that has been shortened to incoherent nonsense. People are suddenly dead and you have no idea when and why that had happened. Alisha and Ruiz are one minute in Amsterdam, in the next sentence they are back in London. I checked my iPod several times if I accidentally had fast forwarded but unfortunately hadn't.
Worsened is the whole experience by the narrator Deni Francis, her monotone in-compassionate voice might be perfect for insomniacs or narrating chick-lit with permanent navel-gazing but is not suitable for a fast-paced crime novel (no comparison to Sean Barret or Crispin Redman).
If you like Michael Robotham, please do not buy this audio book, wait until an unabridged version will be available.

Very strange!

I am very surprised that this is a Michael Robotham. It's awful - really not up to his usual wonderful standard, and Ruiz seems to be a different person I am forcing myself to finish it. Narrater didn't help either - very boring. Same, because I am a real Robotham fan :(

Very disappointing

I am a huge Michael Robotham fan and when I read that Ruiz was in this I couldn't wait. What a let down. Awful Narration diabolical and Ruiz didn't come through at all. Awful weak story. I can't believe it's a Michael Robotham. Don't waste your money

OK spin-off

I usually shy away from 'ABRIDGED', but I liked previous O'Loughlin/Ruiz story-lines so gave this a go.
It focuses on Ali Barba, who came to our attention in the Wreckage (I think), Ruiz pops up and goes off like a bull in a china shop, but O'Loughlin is absent.
The plot is good, it spins around and covers some of the characters history as well as staying grounded in the 'present', the end is predictable, but not entirely...

Don’t bother

I have listened to many of MR’s audio books. This was so disappointing. The narration was poor - not able to convey tension or mystery - just quite flat. I felt like chunks of the story was missing. Don’t waste a credit or money.

Didn't realise it was an abridged version !

Really disappointed it was abridged.
Some of the narrators accents were a bit dodgy/same.
Really enjoyed the story just wish it was the full thing!

Another brilliant book by Michael Robotham.

A really good story with lots of tension, brilliant characters and well narrated by Deni Francis who is new to me.

I have thoroughly enjoyed this, as with all of MR'S books I was drawn in emotionally

Another fabulous treat from Michael Robotham!

I couldn't stop listening to this with it's twists & turns. it was read beautifully with calmness, tension, all emotions being highlighted superbly.

It doesn't end how you would expect it to which is typical Robotham. As always, from start to finish it was enthralling!

Great story and a great performance from the reader

I enjoyed this Audible book. Good story, content and characters. Whilst not Robothams best story it was good in that it wasn’t formula.
The lead character was flawed but that made her likeable.
Deni Francis the reader had the perfect and compelling voice for the book.
