Publisher's Summary

Following on from The Reality Dysfunction, The Neutronium Alchemist is the second epic novel in the Night's Dawn trilogy by Peter F. Hamilton.

The ancient menace has finally escaped from Lalonde, shattering the Confederation's peaceful existence. Those who succumbed to it have acquired godlike powers but now follow a far from divine gospel as they advance inexorably from world to world.

On planets and asteroids, individuals battle for survival against the strange and brutal forces unleashed upon the universe. Governments teeter on the brink of anarchy, the Confederation navy is dangerously overstretched, and a dark messiah prepares to invoke his own version of the final Night.

In such desperate times, the last thing the galaxy needs is a new and terrifyingly powerful weapon. Yet Dr Alkad Mzu is determined to retrieve the Alchemist - so she can complete her 30-year-old vendetta to slay a star. Which means Joshua Calvert has to find Dr Mzu and bring her back before the Alchemist can be reactivated.

But he's not alone in the chase, and there are people on both sides who have their own ideas about how to use the ultimate doomsday device.

Best Space Opera I have Ever Read

I have yet to read a better space opera than this one. Can wait to start the next book. Think I will download it now.

A Masterpiece

Continues to be an amazingly rich world. For a story so beyond our own time and technological development, the characters remain so genuinely human. So keen to keep listening to what will happen next.

Confusing

There is no delineation between chapters, before I realised, the narrator was continuing the next chapter without a pause . Way to many characters to keep track of, to many ideas left unfinished. An exciting ending that was ultimately unsatisfying. Struggled to finish it .

Heading required

Slow builder but the last few hours of payoffs are a fantastic rollercoaster ride. Fifteen words required what is this.

A vast improvement on the first

Excellent evolution of the characters and solid speculative science. Improves on every aspect that was set up in the first book.

Terrible Australian accents, but very few outside of Australia get it right.

why isn't this a TV series yet?

so much vivid scifi detail. easy to spot the similar ideas used in his other series but still original.

Broken recording

At least two chapters are cut in the middle. Super bad for a paid product.

I continue to be surprised and amazed by the seemingly limitless enjoyment that I experience from these works. With many thanks to author, talent and production.

Missing about 2 hours of the story

Is there anything you would change about this book?

I would include the WHOLE book there is two large chunks of Audio missing. It suddenly stops at 29:54 chapter 8 there is at least 30-40 minutes missing there. Chapter 22 ends at 07:29 missing at least an hour there. It is not complete and should not be released in this state. I could understand if it was a second hand book that I had picked up, but it is a full price professionally produced product. Not good enough!

great story

a gripping futuristic adventure all through. only one negative comment, and that is the reader not leaving clear pauses between sections. otherwise, very good!

Wow

What a story. Can be confusing in parts. Needed to rewind a couple of times due to complexity of the story line. However I could not stop listening. Narration was ok. Needed to put in more breaks so you can keep up with the story. Can’t wait for more from this author

Just one small flaw

I am massive fan of Peter Hamilton's work and this trilogy is stunning in its imagination and scope so five stars for the story. The narration is also great for the most part with one irritant which is more to do with the editing; there are no pauses between the sub sections of paragraphs so when the story switches (as it does quite a bit in Hamilton's work) between the major story lines, you need to double take to make sure you've not missed anything. This may sound trivial but by the end of this book (second of the series) it has become a real issue for me. It's a shame because otherwise this is a fantastic production. I would recommend it of course, despite this flaw and hopefully the publisher can take note for future offerings.

Defeat snatched from the jaws of victory

A great book completely ruined by poor editing. Making difficult to follow and painfully confusing. Put some gaps in this you plonkers. I'm going to score the performance as bad but I mean the editing.

Brilliant trilogy, bad editing, bits missing!

This is book two of a very long and complex trilogy, the imagination in the story is fantastic. I have the hardbacks and thought I would like to listen to the series again whilst gardening etc. What a disappointment! The story is even more fantastic than I remember and John Lee narrates it perfectly but.... it is so very badly edited. One paragraph leads so quickly into another without a pause that it you don't realize that you are now listening to a different set of people. there are also bits missing. Very badly done Audible!

WOW

As Promised I started book 2 when I woke. And 'Oh My God's' this rollicking space opera continues it's Saga unabashedly. Granted, from time to time I would lose track of who was what and where and who!? So I went back a few pages to catch what I didn't get or simply missed... lol I work nights and on one occasion had to go back 3 chapters. But in the end I had it all straight in my mind and rushed on to the end and book 3.

Totally gripping from start to finish. An absolute masterpiece. Can't wait to get started on the next book.
