Publisher's Summary

Private investigator Charlie Parker returns in this heart-pounding thriller, with Angel and Louis taking centre stage, following from events in A Book of Bones, from the internationally best-selling author of the acclaimed Charlie Parker novels.

In Amsterdam, three people are butchered in a canal house, their remains arranged around the crucified form of their patriarch, De Jaager: fixer, go-between and confidante of the assassin named Louis. The men responsible for the murders are Serbian war criminals. They believe they can escape retribution by retreating to their homeland.

They are wrong.

For Louis has come to Europe to hunt them down: five killers to be found and punished before they can vanish into the east.

There is only one problem.

The sixth.

Purchased despite dismal last two books

This is significantly more enjoyable than the last two books, but suffers because it's far too long. None of the characters other than Charlie, (who makes a fleeting appearance) and Louis and Angel, are just not interesting even as supposed super baddies. The series does not appear to be going anywhere, It's tired, formulaic, repetitious and not within shouting distance of the earlier Charlie Parker books which were magnificent. Jeff Harding is again up to his spectacular best form.

Not much about Charlie Parker

I liked the fact Charlie eventually got it on with the police woman. Finally. But stuff about Serbian crime gangs became ever so boring. Bring back Maine and Charlie as the prime story lines. You almost lost me on this one.

Another great book

I have read every book in this series and loved them all. Even with just a passing cameo role of Parker this time around, the author has still captured the magic with Angel and Louis. Great narration. When is the next book out !

Not enough Charlie Parker

Love this series of books but I have to say I missed having Parker as the main character!

the nameless ones

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, just as I've enjoyed all John Connolly books. Angel and Louis play the main characters with Charlie Parker playing the small part. This in no way spoils the book as Charlie Parker books need Angel and Louis. I was hooked on this book and didn't want it to end.

Always brilliant.

Always love John Connolly’s books and Jeff Harding brings the characters to life. Can’t wait for the next one.

Awful

Badly performed, the content is gratuitously sadistic and horribly misogynistic. I had to clean out my ears after I heard the first hour of this dreadful book. Will not, cannot listen to the remainder.

Gripping thriller

Enjoyed references to history of Bosnian war and Serbian underworld. More characterisation of bad guys than is usual in thrillers and I liked that. No need to have read any prior books in series. I hadn’t.

Poor Story, Well Written & Performed

As it says in the title
Jeff Harding does a good job with a well written but basically dull and drawn out story
