About this listen

What would you do if you found out you'd been raising another couple's child - and they've been raising yours?

Fourteen years ago, Kelsey and Raf Maccioni left hospital with their newborn daughter, Ammy. Days later, Shona and Nathan James welcomed the birth of their son, Zac.

The only thing the two couples have in common is the IVF clinic where their dreams came true. They are strangers to each other - for now.

Fast forward to April 2024 . . . Ammy has grown into a rebellious young woman, and Zac is a kind but introverted teenager.

Life may not be perfect for either family, but like everyone else they are muddling through.

Until Ammy takes a DNA test for a school project. At first the results are puzzling. Then disturbing. Then earth-shattering - when the IVF clinic admits a terrible mistake.

The Mix-Up is an engaging, thought-provoking read that blends intrigue, emotion, and unexpected twists with ease. The story kept me hooked from start to finish, with characters that feel real and relatable. It’s one of those rare books that stays with you long after you’ve turned the final page. Highly recommended!

Loved the flow of this novel and the story as well. It was good to hear places that are familiar and I can picture the schools and the Melbourne travels.
Enjoyed the story from the different characters view point.

Great story!

The Mix-up by Kylie Ladd

Earlier this week, I took an ear pod out and told my husband, "You know that author event we are going to next week? I'm listening to the book now, and it's CRAZY pants."

Fourteen-year-old Ammy takes a DNA test for a school science project, but her results don't reflect her father's Italian or her mother's Scottish ancestry. Her parents are separated and not on the best of terms, but both insist there must be a mistake with the DNA kits. Ammy was an IVF baby, so there shouldn't be any question.

They contact the DNA test kit company, receive three new kits, and retest, but the results are the same: Ammy isn't related to them. Kelsy contacts the IVF clinic and requests a meeting, and it is discovered that there has been a mix-up. Another couple has raised their biological son, who they've named Zac, and Ammy, is that couple's child genetically.

The kids are 14, so the answer is not simply to switch the children back. What should they do when they've each loved and raised the children they thought were theirs? And what about Zac's 11-year-old sister, Pippa? How will this mix-up affect other family members, like the kid's grandparents?

The Mix-up was my first read by Australian author Kylie Ladd, but this crazy pants story and the preview of I'll Leave This with You, made me add that to my increasingly out-of-control TBR pile. I'm looking forward to the author event next week.

This story is CRAZY pants (in a good way)

A lovely book with engaging characters. When the unthinkable happens to two families, it is going to need people who are willing to see things differently and adjust their thinking so they can have what is truly worth it.

Uplifting story

I do not understand how authors stretch a story like this. I mistakenly thought it was based on truth, so that’s my fault. The chapters go on and on. Dead boring
