You don't have one brain - you have three; your ancient Chimp brain that keeps you alive, your modern Professor brain that navigates the civilized world, and your Computer brain that accesses your memories and runs your habits (good and bad). They fight for control all the time and that's when bad things happen. What if you could stop the thoughts and feelings you don't want? You can.

The power to become better, greater, more refined versions of ourselves is something that each one of us possesses. It is a power with which we are born, like infinite gold inside the equally infinite mine shafts that are our minds. Now, to get at that gold - there is the rub. Since time immemorial people have struggled to manage the darkness within themselves. How do we reckon our possibilities with our capabilities? How do we overcome the difficulties within? How do we shake off the invisible sandbags that seem to drag us down and run faster, jump higher, push harder?

Publisher's Summary
Michael Jordan credits George Mumford with transforming his on-court leadership of the Bulls, helping Jordan lead the team to six NBA championships. Mumford also helped Kobe Bryant, Andrew Bynum, and Lamar Odom and countless other NBA players turn around their games. A widely respected public speaker and coach, Mumford is sharing his own story and the strategies that have made these athletes into stars in The Mindful Athlete: The Secret to Pure Performance. His proven, gentle but groundbreaking mindfulness techniques can transform the performance of anyone with a goal, be they an Olympian, weekend warrior, executive, hacker, or artist.
Mumford's deeply moving personal story is unforgettable. A basketball player at the University of Massachusetts (where he roomed with Dr. J, Julius Erving), injuries forced Mumford out of the game he loved. The meds that relieved the pain of his injuries also numbed him to the emptiness he felt without the game and eventually led him to heroin. After years as a functioning addict, Mumford enrolled in Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn's Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction program, and made meditation, on and off the cushion, the center of his life. He kicked drugs, earned a master's degree in counseling psychology and began teaching meditation to inmates and others.
When Michael Jordan left the Chicago Bulls to play baseball in 1993, the team was in crisis. Coach Phil Jackson, a long-time mindfulness practitioner, contacted Dr. Kabat-Zinn to find someone who could teach mindfulness techniques to the struggling team - someone who would have credibility and could speak the language of his players. Kabat-Zinn led Jackson to Mumford and their partnership began. Mumford has worked with Jackson and each of the eleven teams he coached to become NBA champions. His roster of champion clients has since blossomed way beyond basketball to include corporate executives, Olympians, and athletes.

Thought provoking.
Pretty good book. As an elite athlete it's not the in depth phycology I was expecting as it skins the top of in depth phycology principles and its quite religion based but even as a more non religious person it's still got some very good points. Worth a read to hear about different perspectives and provoke awareness..something a lot of phycology based books miss.

For the athlete to learn mindfulness....
NOT for the student of mindfulness who is looking to apply it to athletics.
That said, for its intended audience, it would probably be career transforming.
I was a student of mindfulness already, looking for more subtle and less obvious ways to be more mindful during performance and practice.
His explanations were mostly basic and obvious for an intermediate student of the mind, success psychology and eastern thought. (Which is blended in the text)
It fell short of my expectations because I had the wrong expectations. That isn't the purpose of the book.
The purpose of the book is to introduce athletes, who have essentially no knowledge of these subjects, to the basic ideas and practices that can help them.
If you are an athlete who wants a mental edge with minimal mumbo-jumbo and psycho-babble then this book IF USED REGULARLY will transform your game. (These are "practices". They don't work without practice)
If you are versed in the subjects mentioned above, this book is probably not for you.
Hope this helps.

Really insightful
I got this audiobook for my husband who had listened to some of George Mumford's meditations.
My husband really liked his way of thinking and putting things in terms of sports. He's really enjoyed the book and has already listened to it 3 times. He swears by it and I've noticed a positive shift in him to.
I'd definitely recommend this book to anyone who loves sports.
