Publisher's Summary

Random House presents the audiobook edition of The Mechanic written and read by Marc 'Elvis' Priestley.

In the high-octane atmosphere of the Formula One pit lane, the spotlight is most often on the superstar drivers. And yet, without the technical knowledge, competitive determination and outright obsession from his garage of mechanics, no driver could possibly hope to claim a spot on the podium. These are the guys who make every world champion, and any mistakes can have critical consequences.

That's not to say the F1 crew is just a group of highly skilled technical engineers, tweaking machinery in wind tunnels and crunching data through high-spec computers. These boys can seriously let their hair down. Whether it be parties on luxury yachts in Monaco or elaborate photo opportunities in gravity-defying aeroplanes, this is a world which thrills on and off the track.

Join McLaren's former number one mechanic, Marc 'Elvis' Priestley, as he tours the world, revealing some of Formula One's most outrageous secrets and the fiercest rivalries, all fuelled by the determination to win.

This is Formula One as you've never seen it before.

Loved the content. For a first narration it was good but i found the constant inflections a bit hard to handle. In all, a great book though

Great insights to the world of F1

I’ve been closely following Marc’s moves on Twitter and on YouTube for the past year or so, but haven’t had the possibility to read his boon until now. What a great and thrilling ride Marc’s able to take us on with him. If you’re a F1 fan or even intersted in sports in general, this one’s a must read. Also the Unkown Kimi Räikkönen is a definite recommendation for all you fans and readers out there.

F1 through a different lens.

Formula 1 is seen as sport of the Gods, where mere mortals are allowed just to peak as the best drivers in the world, race their state of the art carbon fibre chariots around the best arenas all around the planet. What Marc Priestly does through this book is bring the sport closer to the public, humanizing it, pulling the curtains away so the flaws are obvious, but also puts a well-deserved spotlight on the so many unsung heroes that help each year just one driver and one team alone claim the title of Formula 1 champions. Though a fan of the sport for more than a quarter of a century and familiar with most sporting events presented in this book, the angle chosen by the author from which he told his story was refreshing, entertaining and, above all, deeply honest. In a competition described as glamourous, fancy and fast, "Elvis" managed to make it more approachable, more attainable. P.S. I highly recommend it to young people dealing with doubts regarding their STEM dream job.

Behind the scenes

Truly great look behind the pitwall. A look into driver mechanic relationships, inter team squabbles, and day-to-day life of a F1 Mechanic. Thankfully this book contains brilliant stories and insight without the tabloid esc fodder or attempt to burn former colleagues. I found Marc on youtube prior to finding this book. I have passed this book along to my fellow F1 buddies.

Unique insight to life within the F1 circus

The author himself reads his very unique first hand account of life in Formula one. The good times the work hard play hard attitude fuled by millions and millions of tobacco sponsored money.

Expected more.

This book was alright. I think it was a wise decision to have the author read it, for this type of book. It just wasn't very interesting. If you had followed the 2007 and 2008 F1 seasons then a lot of the racing stuff, e.g. spygate, the Fernando and Lewis rift etc is already well documented and known about. There were some funny moments especially surrounding a pair of hair clippers, but a lot of it comes off as silly boys pranks. Destroying hotel rooms and hire cars isn't funny. It's rude and disrespectful. The book lost me immediately with those tales, but I persevered anyway just to finish it. An average book that I'm happy I finished but wouldn't recommend anyone to go out of there way for to read or listen to it.

Not very technical, but entertaining indeed

Was expecting more of a mechanical insight into the cars but it was mainly stories of what the mechanics got up to in their time away from track, and how they navigated a few scandals that gripped f1. Still, it was thoroughly entertaining and i enjoyed every minute.
