Publisher's Summary
A decades-old murder. A blood-thirsty cult. A house full of spirits.
Scarlett DeHaven leaves Nashville behind for a new beginning in the Shenandoah Valley without memories of drug addiction and rehab. But after purchasing an abandoned house with a disturbing past in the hopes of transforming it into a luxury bed-and-breakfast, she experiences visions and voices.
Strangers appear, bearing cryptic warnings. And a tunnel is discovered underneath the house - one that was historically used for a local cult’s rituals.
It doesn’t take long for Scarlett to realize she is being targeted by violent spirits. Driven to the edge of despair, she vows to fight back, but she has no idea what she’s really battling. And her nightmare is just beginning.
From the author of Wildfell comes a gripping supernatural thriller in which the monsters may be vampires, demons, or flesh and blood. It is a nightmare that will make you believe it could easily happen to you.

BORING !!
This was so boring. Nothing really happened, none of the characters were overly likeable to care what happens. But then again nothing happened. I only kept going as waiting for something, ANYTHING, was annoyingly disappointed. It was not scary or creepy on any level. Such a waste of time & a credit. And the narrator spoke sooooooo sloooooow which didn't help the story at all. I had to increase the speed to 1.4, - 1.5 just to get through.

Definitely a great haunted house book.
Human vampire, Incubuses, and Cults. Reader who has the perfect tone for a person with some drug issues and likes xanax but If I saw 1% of what the girl saw I would of pooped my pants and ran away. Great all around horror/haunted house book and I have read pretty much every haunted house book I can find.

Good story.... may read the book
Much like the other reviews, I also had trouble with the tinny audio & the narrator isn't great. It's a good story if you can tune it out.

Audio is very tinny, and her accents are horrid!
In her regular reading voice, this narrator is fine, but her British accent was laughably bad. I would've enjoyed it much more if she didn't even try. Also, there's a problem with the audio where it sounds like it's being played in a tin can. It became especially bad in the last third of the book. I thought it may be my headphones so I switched, and then switched devices, didn't help. The story is bland and predictable. It's not a horrible listen, but there's better out there, I wouldn't waste a credit.

Engaging story, with great atmosphere!
On recommendation from my wife, I listened to this book. The first chapter was very cliche, and the performer was reading in a choppy style. I almost stopped. But don’t!! Once you get to chapter 3 the story begins to draw you in with that urge that you just don’t want to stop until the mystery is ferreted out. Ms DeVault’s performance gets better as the interaction between characters becomes deeper and the authors descriptions become more atmospheric. By the end I had almost forgotten the rough start to the story, and will probably purchase and listen to Ms Clarke’s new story Wildfell. Overall, it was a satisfying experience, and I would recommend you read this story.

Not impressed
There were so many times throughout this story I was hoping the main character would just die. Without giving too much away, she falls vicitm to her own devices, repeatedly and it was tiresome. Glad its over and I doubt I'll listen to another title by this author. It wasn't scary in the least.

Poor narration
The most difficult part about this book was the narration. The accents weren’t great, but it was the weird inflection throughout that made it pretty awful. The book itself was m’eh. Not horrible, kind of predictable.

Don't waste your time
One of the worst, most boring, poorly written books I've ever read. It was only made worse by one of the worst readings I've heard. No inflection, horrible accent, monotone voice. it actually sounded like the narrator was bored.
