About this listen

In Edmund White's most moving novel yet, an American living in Paris finds his life transformed by an unexpected love affair.

Austin Smith is pushing fifty, loveless and drifting, until one day he meets Julien, a much younger, married Frenchman. In the beginning, the lovers' only impediments are the comic clashes of culture, age, and temperament. Before long, however, the past begins to catch up with them. In a desperate quest to save health and happiness, they move from Venice to Key West, from Montreal in the snow to Providence in the rain. But it is amid the bleak, baking sands of the Sahara that their love is pushed to its ultimate crisis.

Would you try another book written by Edmund White or narrated by Ken Kliban?

I love Edmund White's writing but the story was really done a disservice by this narrator. I would try another book written by Edmund White but not if it was narrated by Ken Kliban. The only positive about the narration was that he had a good French accent for the French words.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Austin - a darling, so well characterised. Surely autobiographical at least to some extent!

How did the narrator detract from the book?

His garbling of beautiful sentences made them sound like rambling nonsense. His dialogue was in the main totally unconvincing.

Great book, terrible narrator
