About this listen

From Sunday Times bestselling author Anita Frank comes an epic tale of love and loyalty at the height of WW2.

Britain, March, 1944.

After a desperate aerial battle over Somerset, a German bomber goes down in flames.

From the safety of her family farm, Joan Marsh watches as three parachutes bloom against the night sky, not realising that one carries a man who will change her life forever.

When Joan discovers the Luftwaffe pilot hiding in her barn, her first instinct is to turn him in – against her better judgment, she offers him shelter instead. As they work side by side in the fields, a forbidden love begins to flourish. But even the most private matters of the heart cannot go unnoticed…

As the walls close in on their unlikely affair, Dieter and Joan's lives become fraught with danger, until passion and patriotism finally collide.

Narrated by award-winning Kristin Atherton, The Man Who Fell from the Sky is an unforgettable story of love, sacrifice and the extraordinary connections that can form even in the darkest moments of history.

Enjoyed the story line think I have heard of similar stories but throughly enjoyed anyway.

I really liked how the complexity of the situation - the protagonists belonging to opposing sides of the war - gave this romance a slow build. It was a believable dichotomy as Joan transitions from outright hostility to a begrudging tolerance, to moments of compassion, a companionable truce, tentative trust, then respect and love. Poignant snippets of back story were well crafted to give depth to many of the characters. My only disappointment was how meek and complying Joan became in the face of Sidney's persistence instead of clearly and politely letting him know she didn't want anything beyond friendship. The author gave a reason but it didn't seem enough to explain what looked to me as a breach in character. Perhaps that is just me though.

All said and done, it was a really satisfying story that was well narrated.

A love story that was worth the read

Such a moving storyline, it reminds me of what my mother told me about the war in England.
