Publisher's Summary

Dien Bien Phu. Saigon. Hanoi. In 1954, they were only exotic names from a French campaign halfway around the world. But now American fighting men - proven on the bloody beaches of Normandy and in the minefields of Korea - are summoned to help beat back the guerilla forces of Ho Chi Minh. To some, the “secret” war in Indochina was the depth of folly. To others, like the majors, it pointed to the heights of glory.

Excellent series in a Military setting

If you liked W.E.B Griffin's "Corp" series, you'll also like this series, “Brotherhood of War”. They are very similar in style, although the characters and stories are all different. As with "Corp", this series is really about people and the trials and challenges of their lives, and much less about the actual wars during with the books are set. The 9 books in the series follow the principle characters thru promotions and ensuing wars over 20 years, spanning from the mid 40’s to the mid 60’s. You most definitely should start with book 1 in the series, The Lieutenants.

These books are about character development and growth in the military setting. I love the military background and the details of life for career service men and women, perhaps because it’s a world I never experienced. I have the greatest respect and admiration for our service men and women, although I never served. There’s no doubt that part of my enjoyment of these books is seeing the inner workings of a life I never experienced – but this review is coming from a guy who was never there.

A Man’s Soap Opera

I have enjoyed the first 3 books in this series. The story is engaging. The historical references are accurate. It is like a Soap Opera written for men!

A Celebration of Warriors

If you ever served, or respected someone who did, WEB Griffin's books will touch your soul. Fact-based story lines punctuated with incidents that remind you (or teach you) about military values, and how the "brotherhood of arms" lives those values, will keep the pages turning. Before long, you'll want to read all six of this prolific author's series.

More mispronunciation of foreign language words

I speak several languages, French and German among them. This narrator obviously speaks neither. His mispronunciations of words in both are horrendous, and they detract from the story, as bad as they are. To be fair, he doesn't mispronounce English language words often, but he blows even those on very rare occasions. Intonation is fair, but the narrator's mistakes shouldn't make him the focus of the story, as they do quite often.

Still A Good Book Just Not Great Like First Two

I still find this to be a good entertaining story with great narration. The problem is Loyle. While he is a major part of the story, there is no way the real-life the Army would keep him except for his money and political pull. Instead of writing it that believable way instead the writer keeps telling us how he is repeatedly saved because he can do a good job while continually embracing the army. There is no replacement with the hundreds of thousands of other soldiers. If the writer fixed that this would have been as great as the other stories.

Awesome book of this series

I followed this series since mid 1980’s when I was a young 2LT US Army. Kind of ate this series up.
