Story
Ellie Fisher loves most things about being a nurse in the emergency department . . . just not working with Regina Novak, an icy attending physician who acts as if she's God's gift to medicine. The dislike is completely mutual. Regina thinks Ellie is a starry-eyed romantic with a sentimental attitude that has no place at work. When Regina gets talked into volunteering at a singles auction, Ellie accidentally bids on her—and ends up winning. Oops! Since the money raised is for a good cause, they reluctantly decide to go through with the dates.

Story
A naïve activist is hired by a corporate villain but doesn't realize it. Cue one awkward farce, a twisty puzzle, and the slowest of slow burns in this opposites-attract, ice queen romance. Nine years ago, aloof, icy Michelle Hastings chose career over love. She's now living with that choice as she rules a secret corporation catering to the rich and powerful. Enter Eden Lawless. The guileless activist finds it a bit weird being employed by a mystery organization to bring down a corrupt mayor. But, hey, she's up for a challenge. Much harder is getting her beautiful new boss out of her head.

Falling stars are supposed to be a lucky sign, but not for Austen. Her new job as a secretary in an international games company isn't off to a good start. Her first assignment - decorating the Christmas tree in the lobby - results in a trip to the ER after Dee, the company's second-in-command, gets hit by the star-shaped tree topper. Dee blames her instant attraction to Austen on her head wound, not the magic of the falling star. She's determined not to act on it, especially since Austen has no idea that Dee is practically her boss.

Publisher's Summary
Molly Cook is almost 30, with dismal career prospects, and has given up on saving the world. It might be the 90s, and everything's shoulder pads, Doc Martens, and The X-Files, but people won't budge on gay rights. Molly decides to give a PhD a whirl but finds herself more interested in campus politics...and her strict and sexy statistics professor.
Professor Carmen Vaughn is stuck in small-town Maryland with smarmy blowhards for colleagues and ungrateful students who can't handle her high standards. She has no intention of coming out, least of all to Molly, a troublemaking grad student who can't stop picking fights with the conservative faculty.
But when Molly discovers evidence implicating a homophobic colleague in a scandal, Carmen can't ignore it - even if the subject hits too close to home. As the two women work together to make their case, they grow closer than Carmen ever imagined. But she absolutely refuses to get involved with a student.
The thing is, as the chemistry builds between them, Molly isn't sure she wants to be a grad student anymore...if she ever did.
Contains mature themes.

Great read and/or listen
Great story. So interesting incorporating historical events and the social mores of the time. The characters were likeable and really pulled you in so that you felt for them, and wanted that happily ever after for them.

favorite lesbian romance writer
This is the second book by Quinn Ivins I get to read/ listen. I am all and all fascinated by the storyline and the description of the characters. The academic workplace and the depiction of the political climate in the late 90's American scene alongside with the gay rights movements in universities really hits home.
I frankly love how Ivins works through a universe where the lives and struggles of the characters are central to the story, which makes it far more pleasant and entertaining than our typical lesbian romance stories where love is all that matters and the rest is very secondary.
