Publisher's Summary

Gabriella Harrison believes, as she is told, that she is to blame for her mother's rage - and her father's failure to protect her. Her world is a confusing blend of terror, betrayal, and pain. Her parents' aristocratic world is no safeguard against the abuse that knows no boundaries, and respects no person and no economic lines. Gabriella knows that, try as she might, there is no safe place for her to hide.

Even as a child, her only escape is through the stories she writes. Only writing can dull the pain of her lonely world. And when her parents' marriage collapses, Gabriella is given her first reprieve, as her father disappears, and then her mother abandons her to a convent. There, Gabriella's battered body and soul begin to mend. Amid the quiet safety and hushed rituals of the nuns, Gabriella grows into womanhood in a safe, peaceful world. Then a young priest comes into her life.

Father Joe Connors never questioned his vocation until Gabriella entered the confessional and shared her soul. Confession leads to friendship. And friendship grows dangerously into love...

What a sad story

This is by far one of the most despair-filled stories I've ever read, at times extreme - at the same time, it kept my interest throughout, and I would recommend it.

Graphic, Moving and Intense

Not your typical chic lit...enjoyable because of the depth of the characters and the compassion it illicits. I would recommend it but don't expect it to be to uplifting. Evokes emotions.

I wish there was more story to Peter

After the overwhelming ordeal she went through with her mother abusing her and nearly beating her to death and her father abandoning her. Being send to a convent when she was young then breaking the rules to follow her heart and then falls in love to then finds out her lover dies. To then to be kick out of the convent to meet yet another abusive con artist lover who also beats her nearly to death and then she is taken to a hospital where she find mr right her doctor. Then the story ends with her staying with the doctor (peter). Danielle Steel puts lots of character development into her parents, her first love who abandons her, the second love who also abused her and then her last love all we learn he is a doctor who cared about her with saying he loved her in the end. I would have hope she would write more about Peter how much he was different from they others in her life. The story felt like It ended with her not trusting men.

Incredibly good

This story reached and took me on an emotional roller coaster. A few times I actually wished I could reach in and pulverize a couple of characters.
Don’t miss reading, it’s absolutely awesome.

Hate, love redemption and a happy ending against the odds

Good overall performanceI could not put this book down. It was tragic and I was affected by the abuse and at one stage I thought I could not go on. It was a book of sadness a woman fighting for her life against the odds. It's also a love story that shows relationships under the microscope. A well written book.
