Publisher's Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

The best-selling author of A Gentleman in Moscow and Rules of Civility and master of absorbing, sophisticated fiction returns with a stylish and propulsive novel set in 1950s America.

In June, 1954, 18-year-old Emmett Watson is driven home to Nebraska by the warden of the juvenile work farm where he has just served 15 months for involuntary manslaughter. His mother long gone, his father recently deceased and the family farm foreclosed upon by the bank, Emmett's intention is to pick up his eight-year-old brother, Billy, and head to California where they can start their lives anew. But when the warden drives away, Emmett discovers that two friends from the work farm have hidden themselves in the trunk of the warden's car. Together, they have hatched an altogether different plan for Emmett's future, one that will take them all on a fateful journey in the opposite direction - to the city of New York.

Spanning just 10 days and told from multiple points of view, Towles' third novel will satisfy fans of his multi-layered literary styling while providing them an array of new and richly imagined settings, characters and themes.

Amor Towles channels John Steinbeck

A great road story where we slowly but surely engage with each character to reveal the choices they make and the consequences of those decisions.
l liked that the author chose to tell the story from the perspectives of each of the protagonists , sometimes in first person and sometimes not.
lt often felt like Amor Towles was channelling John Steinbeck in that the characters are on the fringe of society often finding themselves having to make tough decisions due to poor luck or bad choices.

This is about the journey, not the destination

This book is a delight. Its ensemble of gorgeously detailed, sometimes flawed characters take you on a circuitous journey that is filled with wonder. I am in awe of Amor Towles’ talent. His use of beautiful language and elegant turns of phrase are a joy to read and read again. What a marvel!

wonderful, Huck Finnesque cadence.

I rarely crave listening to the next chapter on many audio books, but this is one if those that really drew me in.

Amor Towles the magnificent

A mesmerising tour de force of a story, rich in characters, rich in the telling and rich in the baritone of its narrator.
A rollicking journey for reader and character alike.
