Publisher's Summary

When the words give way to violence, the unthinkable happens.

A bomb explodes in a small mountain town. Was it a terrorist acting alone or the beginning of something much more frightening?

Tommy Joss is working long hours, making a life for his daughter and wife. He doesn't have time to worry about politics and the endless arguments pouring across his social media feed. He has debts to pay and a boss to keep happy.

When he returns from a business trip to find his house dark and empty, he discovers blood on the floor and a cryptic message painted on the door.

His wife and daughter are missing. Kidnapped, dead, or disappeared for their political views, he doesn't know which. But his search to find them will turn deadly for their captors and will put Tommy in the middle of a war he never had any interest in fighting.

I tried to listen as long as I could..

But in the end, I return it. It was too slow of a pace. I’m sure the book is good but there wasn’t enough draw for me to stick it out. Ray Porter is THE BEST narrator and he couldn’t keep me engaged to the story. Truth be told, it was his narration that was the only lifeline for me. Will try another book. I’ve struck out on 2 books so far... hoping the 3rd try is a home run.

Terrible

As usual great narration but it couldn't help a terrible story. Sort of a tin foil hat far far left story. Forced myself through a couple of hours and gave up.

Lack of depth sinks the story

This was a difficult listen on several levels. The dialogue seemed to be mindless at different junctures where the author seemed to be prattling on, saying little. The descriptions were often adolescent and lacked depth and betrayed a limited vocabulary. Really, there were many cringe-worthy phrases that made me want to scream, “Edit! Please!”

So yeah, back up and take a breath, a deep breath.

Not sure if this is an indictment of social media or a call for action, but either way we all need to back up and take a breath. As Mr. Lincoln so aptly said, " a house divided cannot stand!" Mr. Adair puts it out there. What will we, or must we do to come together as a nation and heal ourselves? As I am a fanboy, no shame here, of Ray Porter, another outstanding performance. I would be interested to hear what he thinks on this same topic. Looking forward to book 2.

Could not get past the first chapter.

I listen to audible books for sheer escape, so I’m looking for something that catches my attention immediately. This was not it. Slow starts are not for me.
