About this listen

WINNER OF THE QBD AWARD FOR BEST FICTION BOOK OF THE YEAR

From the bestselling author of The Wife and the Widow and The Nowhere Child.

When human remains are discovered in a forest, police are baffled, the locals are shocked and one group of old friends starts to panic. Their long-held secret is about to be uncovered.

It all began in 1999 when sixteen-year-old Aaron ran away from home, drawing his friends into an unforeseeable chain of events that no one escaped from unscathed.

In The Ledge, past and present run breathlessly parallel, leading to a cliff-hanger nobody will see coming. This is a mind-bending new novel from the master of the unexpected.

'Christian White is the master of the big twist. I loved it.' CHRIS HAMMER

'The Ledge is a coming of age story where not everybody comes of age. I promise you won't see the twist coming.' MICHAEL ROBOTHAM

‘It is not enough to say that it is unputdownable. If his other books hadn't before, this novel certainly cements Christian White as an incredible, chilling voice in the Australian crime genre.' READINGS

I loved that the story told over two timelines. Lots of twists that were unexpected. Highly recommended.

Excellent and very unpredictable plot. Outstanding narration. The market is full of average thriller/mysteries. Christian White’s books stand out.

A really good thriller in a sea of mediocrity.

A heavy coming of age story full of sadness and mystery. The childish banter and insults made me laugh and took me back to my younger years. Very well written.

I didn’t pick the twist, and the ending was surprising. Evil appeared to triumph and I felt a bit let down by that.

Complex plot and surprising ending

Holy moly. What a ride! The twist at the end is a banger, and even though I read reviews and was forewarned I was absolutely blindsided. Excellent author, excellent narrator, go for it.

Fortyish male novelist returns to his hometown in the mountains of rural Victoria after a decomposed body is found in bushland nearby. Relives teenage trauma that has haunted him for over 20 years. Twin narratives told in alternating chapters: (1) contemporary, third person from POV of protagonist, (2) historical, first person by his bestie from back in the day. Crisp prose. Reasonable pacing. Twists and turns mostly predictable. Satisfactory resolution.
