Publisher's Summary

Soon to be a major TV series starring Jennifer Garner, produced by Reese Witherspoon's production company Hello Sunshine, makers of Big Little Lies and Little Fires Everywhere.

It was the last thing he told me: protect her.

Before Owen Michaels disappears, he manages to smuggle a note to his new wife, Hannah: protect her. Hannah knows exactly who Owen needs her to protect - his 16-year-old daughter, Bailey, who lost her mother tragically as a child. And who wants absolutely nothing to do with her new stepmother.

As her increasingly desperate calls to Owen go unanswered, his boss is arrested for fraud and the police start questioning her, Hannah realises that her husband isn't who he said he was. And that Bailey might hold the key to discovering Owen's true identity and why he disappeared. Together they set out to discover the truth. But as they start putting together the pieces of Owen's past, they soon realise that their lives will never be the same again....

A beautiful and thrilling mystery, perfect for fans of Lianne Moriarty and Celeste Ng.

Really loved this book

Listened to this in a day. The storyline was really well thought out & I didn’t want it to end. Love the Narrator too.

Almost perfect, almost

Unfortunately, the “I said”/ “She said”/ “He said” after EVERY line of dialogue was annoying as all heck. Once I noticed it about an hour or two in, it bothered me for the rest of the novel. Otherwise it was a wonderful listen with a bit of suspense, drama and great characters

great story

I liked this story, but the narration of it was really off putting. although the narrators voice was clear & well spoken, she sounded almost robotic and the constant "he said, she said, I said" was annoying to the point I almost stopped listening several times.
given the choice again, I would physically read this book instead of listening to it

Boring

So boring so much dialogue. The whole story could have been written in 3 pages. Don’t bother reading it not worth it.

Outstanding

Possibly the best book I’ve read this year. This book warmed my heart but also left it a little broken. Beautifully written story, so much love, courage and sacrifice - just loved it. One of those books you continually keep thinking about. A must read!

The Last Thing He Told Me

Reasonably good plot but read in an overly melodramatic American style, which made it a little unrealistic.

A lovely read

A truly in-depth discovery into Hannah’s soul. I loved it, and will confess to a little tear or two at the end.

Not as good as expected

I chose to listen to this book because Reese Witherspoon raved on the Instagram that this book is so good. She usually gets it right, but not this time.
Maybe Reese and I have different taste in book. This book left me feeling flat. No thrilling in the story.
The characters are 2 dimensional hence it’s hard for me to like the characters.
Just not for me.

great book for a limited time

A great book to pass the time, as in flight or vacation. It is entertaining, I would have loved more character depth and plot, but it's awesome for what it is.

Engaging twisty turny plot

One of those thrillers that gives you enough clues to make you find some of your own answers. An easy, engrossing listen.

Riveting!

Couldn't stop listening!! Truly captivating. Hope the movie is on its way - would love to see how it resonates with the way I animated it for myself!

Good start but gets lost and then boring

Fabulous beginning and totally gripping, if absolutely zero characterisation. Good plotting. But when the plot falls apart the appalling writing gets seriously exposed. Dave writes every sentence three times as if for emphasis or clarity? God knows. I kept shouting at the stereo; 'Full stop! Stop there!' It was all this kind of thing; 'She wondered if he had a notebook, somewhere to write down what she was saying, to log all her words.' Just stop at notebook. Please. Please. Every single sentence was like this. Nonetheless, it was completely gripping until Mr Big shows up and it becomes ludicrous and boring. It's hard to keep up suspense and keep a plot interesting. Dave fails.

He says.. she says..

Good story but the amount of times the phrases he says or she says etc are used is incredibly annoying

Long winded, drawling, repetitive and tiring

I wish I could be kinder, but really this was a waste of my time. Constantly repeated phrases ‘what are you talking about’ ‘he says’ ‘I said’ pad out this story that hardly has any true excitement or thrills. The ending was ok, as good as it could be I suppose, however the motives of the characters were sketchy and not satisfactory. A complex puzzle certainly, very much US centric of course. Hannah, the wood turner, is a realist challenged by the initially unexplainable disappearances her husband who she thought she knew. A man called Nicholas Ball is introduced as a Bad Man but comes across as caring and loving. A Texas Marshal knows what’s best but does he? So many people to register. Bailey is the best and ultimately likeable… you may like it more than I did.

Speed up!!

Great story, couldn't put it down! My only criticism is the speed the narrator read at, holy moly was it slow! Had to increase the pace a good bit.

Very dull & underwhelming

Don't waste your time with this one, very long and drawn out and nothing really happens! Very disappointing. Narrator is monotone and slow.

Nearly every sentence finishes with “I/she/he said”

Although story gripping enough it became irritating to listen to as practically every speech moment finishes with I/he/she said

Predictable

Good writing and narration but it wasn’t amazing. Very similar to a lot of other books out there and slightly predictable. If you want an easy listen this is perfect .

An enjoyable listen

I enjoyed this and was very listenable! However, as a thriller fan, I wasn't blown away!
