Publisher's Summary

Jacquetta, daughter of the count of Luxembourg and kinswoman to half the royalty of Europe, was married to the great Englishman John, duke of Bedford, uncle to Henry VI. Widowed at the age of 19, she took the extraordinary risk of marrying a gentleman of her household for love and then carved out a life for herself as Queen Margaret of Anjou's close friend and a Lancaster supporter - until the day that her daughter, Elizabeth Woodville, fell in love and married the rival king Edward IV. Of all the little-known but important women of the period, her dramatic story is the most neglected. With her links to Melusina and to the founder of the house of Luxembourg, together with her reputation for making magic, she is the most haunting of heroines.

Very Short and left wanting

I really do not understand the purpose of Abridged novels - unless its targeted to those with ADD
I am sure the actual book is magnificent like all of Philippa Gregory's books - but for some reason they only have this one in the abridged version.
Was like a summary of events - I may need to buy the book to find out what was missed

This is NOT unabridged

Really disappointed that this book is abridged. Some parts don't make sense as previous sections are missing. A real shame, as it's a great book.

NOT UNABRIDGED

Actually feel like asking for my credit back on this, I like to swap between reading the book and listening while I'm cleaning driving etc but this isn't possible with this audio book even though it says unabridged it isn't, there are chunks missing and those parts are huge when you try to go back to the book it leaves you confused. this is the first time I've been disappointed with an audio book.

Not unabridged

Great story, too good to to miss half by listening to the abridged. Looking forward to the rest in the series

Captivating

What made the experience of listening to The Lady of the Rivers the most enjoyable?

It was wonderfully narrated and so very interesting.

What did you like best about this story?

Putting it in historical context - If you haven't watched The White Queen series then it helps to put this in context - also related to Philippa Gregory's historical novel series The Cousins' War.

Have you listened to any of Tracy-Ann Oberman’s other performances? How does this one compare?

No, but would again.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

If I could have.

Any additional comments?

Brilliant - one of the best audio books I've listened to.

monotonous, lacking in richness

In other Philippa Gregory books I've read, the characters have a rich inner life, and this happens against the backdrop of fascinating historical events. This one is different. It's very 'this happened then this happened then this happened', and the things that happen are quite repetitive and hard to keep track of. I don't know, but I suspect that this is because it's abridged. Sacrificing narrative would make later narrative events not make sense, so instead the abridged version sacrifices the detail and inner lives of the characters that make the books interesting. I managed to get most of the way through this book, but eventually realised I didn't really care what happened to the characters because I hadn't really connected with them.

Prophetic and perceptive, a real page turner

a wonderful journey of how a woman struggled with her ability to sense the implications of the actions of the key players. Giving a voice from the past a modern hearing into the power struggles of an interesting period of history. So enjoyed it, I really felt I was being given a first-hand account.
