Publisher's Summary

A cosmopolitan title to get excited about in 2018!

Stella Lane thinks math is the only thing that unites the universe. She comes up with algorithms to predict customer purchases - a job that has given her more money than she knows what to do with as well as way less experience in the dating department than the average 30-year-old. It doesn't help that she has Asperger's and that French kissing reminds her of a shark getting its teeth cleaned by pilot fish. She decides that she needs lots of practice - with a professional - which is why she hires escort Michael Phan.

The Vietnamese-Swedish stunner can't afford to turn down Stella's offer, and he agrees to help her check off all the boxes on her lesson plan - from foreplay to more-than-missionary position... Before long, Stella not only learns to appreciate his kisses but also to crave all of the other things he's making her feel. Their no-nonsense partnership starts making a strange kind of sense. And the pattern that emerges convinces Stella that love is the best kind of logic...

Made me melt.

Helen Hoang has written a doozy! It was achingly good- i loved the relationship development between Stella and Micheal throughout the book. Also, SO MUCH STEAM! Argh. Enough said.

Narration was amazing.

Until the characters started having sex I was spellbound. Then I needed to skip nearly whole chapters of boring sex to get back to a decent story. Sorry, it was just too much, detail by detail, sex. If its going to be a sweet love story with the bite of quirkiness that made it interesting, then leave it sweetish please. Sex is ok in small doses where it is integral to the story. Those other novels that have lots of steamy sex throughout several chapters have sexual tension and perhaps conflict between the characters to get you there with the characters. Otherwise you feel like you are just watching...eeww.

The Best of its day

This book evoked the inner high school in me, the roller coaster of emotions and the amazingly different and strong character. It made me realise that people with autism are not always sad and depressing, they are just normal people. Simply amazing, I cannot wait to read more of helen Hoang!!!!

I love this story!

I'm a real fan of The Kiss Quotient - my fav type of characters to read about are those with quirky personalities. This story isn't new to me, I've read it as an ebook a few times, but really wanted to listen to the audible version as well. 5 stars for the story, 4 stars for the narration - can;t wait for this authors next book to release :)

Easy romance with a bit of difference

I thought this would be a mindless listen but found I really enjoyed it. Yes, it is your typical easy romance story but I enjoyed the characters and the slightly different take on things. Anyone who’s into trashy romance will like it. Thought the narrator did a good job too.

A sexy, heart lightening listen to make you smile(& gasp with the cheeky pleasure)

It is hard no to float along with the lightness and appreciate the balance with the sensitivity and the sexiness without needing to think about it in depth to deconstruct it.
If one wanted to pick it apart, criticise it and dismiss it, that is obviously a possible option. But why bother? There is to much harshness in the world these days to waste your time, energy and effort with that
***a heads up that it has extremely intimate moments, but sidesteps feeling like you are listening to explicit, pornographic description that could offense.

Loved this!

This was a new author for me and a new narrator. Both were so fun with this book. I loved the characters and thought they were well rounded. The narrator made their voices come to life. I will gladly find both again and try more.

I don't speak Vietnamese, so unsure if things are pronounced correctly, but seeing the ebook and listening made me glad to know how to not pronounce things.

The secondary characters were so much fun and I am curious about possibly learning more about Michael's family.

It's a lot...

the story was really cute ,but theres a lot of descriptive sex, and not the creative kind. I've read other books with the "hot damn" description but this one basically the first half of the book is constant sex scenes. the second half isn't as bad, but it is a little excessive for my taste. If you like that kind of stuff, it's great, but I almost had to give up. narrator is awesome though.

I'd buy these two undies.

This book was a fun romance to romp through. I went in expecting it to be similar to The Rosie Project...that it is not! It's got some pretty vividly explicit sex scenes. Those don't bother me but can be a shocker if you aren't expecting them to pop up.
I also felt like this book portrayed both instalove and slow burn at the same time. Not being a fan of instalove at all, I greatly enjoyed the ways that also made this a slow burn romance.
It's definitely a quick one to get through and lots of fun getting there (expect several chuckles along the way!).

Superb, feel good romance that one can connect to, appreciate and dream about.

Highly recommend this novel, especially to fans of the hating game whore looking for similarly moving novels.

Very refreshing, swoony & romantic! A+

This has been a delight of an audiobook!! The story is such a great romance, but it is the characters, how they engage with each other and how the author was able to show so much of their inner thoughts that made them seem real making this story unique and wonderfully refreshing! The narration is OUTSTANDING!! Carly Robins has always been a favorite of mine but she really delivered a solid performance filled with humor, heart, compassion and great tempo. Deserving of all the accolades!! A solid romance well worth the hype.

I can tell why this book had so much hype!

I can tell why this book received so much attention. It has some awesome elements that I feel aren’t usually seen and combined in contemporary romance: mixed race gender-bent Pretty Woman + heroine on the autism spectrum. Not to mention, I feel like the reader market is primed for this right now. The current trend of things seems to be inclusivity and diversity, which I love and which this book definitely meets with its two MCs.

The book was cute and I enjoyed reading it much more than The Rosie Project—probably because I identify more easily with a female protagonist. I loved the in-depth detail of Stella’s struggle. Plus, Michael was a sweetie. I enjoyed the build-up of his past and the tensions created in Stella by meeting his family. Not the mention the premise of the book is pretty funny!

The inner conflict/turmoil from both Michael and Stella were believable, which I appreciated. They were both making assumptions about the other person’s feelings or motives, felt like they weren’t good enough, and were hiding facts about themselves that they didn’t like or made them feel insecure. While the MCs were very mirrored in this way, I still bought into each person’s turmoil. I felt their insecurities made sense and would be common in situations like theirs.

The book was pretty smooth sailing until the end of the book where the main external conflict happened. While this was enjoyable (because who doesn’t like to live in a love bubble, right?), it also started to get slightly stale for me. I found myself waiting for the other shoe to drop, and I felt it took slightly longer than I wanted it to. I wanted them to have a bit more expressed struggle throughout their “practice” relationship and a little less internal struggle. Especially towards the end of the book, Michael’s internal struggle felt very repetitive and began to get annoying. He’s still a sweetie, but a repetitive sweetie.

What I DID absolutely love (although I wish it had more page time and more of a dedicated arc throughout the book) was Stella’s revelations at about 95% of the way through the book: if you have to change yourself for someone, then they aren’t right for you. No one wins in that situation. You do not need to change yourself for a man. Just because you are autistic, doesn’t mean you need to be “fixed”; you are broken, you are who you are and that’s okay.
I was pumping my fist in the air and yelling “You GO Girl!” at that point. This is a message that so, so many men and women need to hear and internalize. Be yourself and if your romantic interest doesn’t like it, then they aren’t right for you and that’s okay.
Like I said, I wish this revelation had more of an established theme that built throughout the book, but (while I enjoyed Stella’s empowering moment) it felt rushed to me as is.

Overall, this is a cute unique romance. I enjoyed it and would be willing to read book two (The Bride Test about Michael’s autistic cousin Khai).

AWESOME

This was a awesome read. Different from others because of the the woman actually being able to be independent which is soooooo refreshing. More books and characters like these are needed.

Quirky sweet socially challenged nerd + tormented, hot Korean hunk= HEA

New author to me, Helen Hoang, offered me some fresh elements- at least unusual in that I can’t remember reading a romance where these characteristics were central to the h or H. Stella, the h is a really endearing character- an econometrics professional who is extremely successful in her field, probably partially due to her hyper focus on her job because her Aspergers makes a social life problematic- and a love life and dating has been confusing and unsatisfying too. Missed signals are just one problem. But now, to complicate matters, as she neared 30 her Mom has expressed her hope for grandchildren and has been pressing for her to date more. Stella’s parents are not a problem- they seem supportive in their way and she loves them and sees them often. So, she just would like to make them happy- if only she could figure out how. A chance conversation in her office inspires her and she bravely comes up with a Plan. On the face of it, a goofy plan...but intellectually... probably pretty sound! She will hire a tutor who will teach her and help her figure out what has been going wrong in her relationships with men in the past. Then she can fix it, and because he will be objective and a professional there won’t be emotions involved. Enter Michael. Yummmm...Michael. Google Daniel Denny (if you don’t already know who this hunky part, I think, Korean actor- “Criminal Minds” among many others). His reasons for becoming an “ escort” are very complex but she still got lucky when she selected him to teach her. Their story...learning about them, their families, their backstories, quirks- all of it- is very satisfying. Interesting characters, interesting issues, interesting resolutions. In typical plot device fashion, I didn’t agree with every choice...but how that initial simple agreement went through a metamorphosis as the journey progressed and actually taught both of them lessons - about themselves and their lives and about Choices- was satisfying. I also liked that the author presented the characters main issues unapologetically- never wimping out. I kept going to the end and you probably will to. Try it!

My favourite audiobook of 2018

I have no truly original things to say about this book but felt compelled to write a review and give thanks to Helen Hoang for her work. At its most basic core, this is just plain good story telling - good writing, solid plot, great depth of character development. As a romance novel, this rekindled my previously waning love for the genre and reminded me of why I always find myself going back to this genre no matter how many disappointments turn me away. These are stories of human connection that are full of hope and light and frame a world I want to live in and connect with. As an original work of art, I found this book to embody the essence of all great original works of art - a mix of the classic with truly original content. The characters are not the classic romance protagonists you generally encounter or consider to be appealing, and yet their stories and settings definitely added so much more depth to the story and my enjoyment. This book will not be a blur like so many other novels I read (and often do not finish before moving on). Keep up the good work Helen Hoang.

Go for the bride test if you have a choice

I read (not listened) the the Bride Test (second book of this author) und really liked it, so I decided to listen to this one, it is not as good and way too many bedroom scenes. There is still enough of it in her second book and the story is much better in my opinion. This was just ok.

**Blush**

I don't normally read romance novels but because this was about an autistic woman I wanted to give it a try. There are some parts that made me blush but I powered through them and absolutely loved the story. I got major book hangover when I finished this and had nothing to fill that void!

Basically an attempt at women's erotica

I clearly didn't read the synopsis properly, it's essentially women's erotica, but not a very good effort. Didn't enjoy it. Found the story and plot progression irritating, as was the narrator. Definitely not for me.

Not what I expected. Listened to the end but annoyingly obvious.

I thought this book would talk a lot more about the intricacies of living with Aspergers and be a bit cleverer about the story line. The story was sexually explicit but that was a bit boring rather than making it more exciting. I listened to the end as I did want to find out what happened but it’s a bit predictable.

Terrible Narrartion

I think I may have enjoyed this story more if I’d read it rather than listened to it. The narration is overly dramatic, and specifically poor at narrating the male voices. I often found myself laughing at how ridiculous it sounded. The story itself could have been better, but it was a cute easy listen.

4.5 stars

I don’t don’t why this book hasn’t got a higher rating. It has won a Goodread award and kept cropping up in my recommendations so I thought I’d give it a whirl despite the rating being around 4 (and on Audible most people seem to rate way too generously which is frustrating, so 4 is usually not that great).

Quality wise it’s up there with my favourite romance authors who have good character development, interesting plots and believable chemistry. I was really absorbed throughout, and the only thing that let it down was the lack of effective communication drama towards the end. Even that didn’t negatively effect it too much for me because overall it was great, so only took half a star off.

I’ll be looking out for more from this author.

Refreshing autistic voice, likeable characters.

This book is not from my preferred genre but I read it because I am autistic and wanted to experience a romance novel from the perspective of a writer's voice that I can connect with. I got sucked in fairly quickly which is unusual. I really liked the protagonist's love interest. I was intrigued by other characters in the story. I am excited for the next book. The narrator's voice was not distracting. Nice to see autistic sexuality and thinking processes being represented but I don't think you don't have to be autistic to enjoy it. Good pace and well executed.
