Publisher's Summary

Sixteen years ago, Princess Halla of Yshrem saved the life of an eight-year-old barbarian boy and watched her kingdom fall to ruin, all on the same day. Now, she is a forgotten spinster in a quiet temple, living her days out in solitude. The last of her line, she exists in the hope that she has been forgotten, for to be remembered by the enemy is to be certain death.

One person has not forgotten her. Mathior, now 24, is the fierce warrior king of the Cyclopae. Yshrem is in turmoil and his advisors have a suggestion - kill the last remaining member of the royal line, and there will be no rivals for the throne.

Mathior has a different idea. He's loved Halla for 16 long years, and it's time he claimed her as his wife. But a barbarian's wedding customs are unlike any other...

Contains mature themes.

Underwhelming

The voice actors are just bad. The guy sounds like the reddit robot and the woman sounds like a dumb blonde with no real essence, hardly a princess and a warlord. The story was ok, but neither of these actors were believable as their characters.

It was nice

I thought the story was nice, it’s unusual to have an older heroine but was 9 years too much? I liked the hero. The heroine was also nice. The story was nice. A quick listen.

Less than average in all ways

The story was bland. It was extremely simplistic, with no real plot or depth. No humour, action or intrigue. It wasn’t awful, just uninteresting.
What really ruined it was the narration. Firstly, the male and female narrators speak at different speeds, which means one will sound unnatural no matter what pace you set your listening tempo to. Secondly, the guy was just terrible. He sounds prim and proper and rather robotic. As though he is discussing a boring lecture he attended at university. Not exactly a passionate, foreign, barbarian warlord. The lady did a fairly good job, four stars for her efforts.
I can’t comment on the steamy scenes, as I fast forwarded through them.
The book was also short, although in this case, it is a blessing. My recommendation - give this one a miss.
