Publisher's Summary

War has broken out in the North. The Corrupt Lord of the Ice has invaded Norghana with a host from the Frozen Continent. Will the king and the Rangers manage to stop him, or will they die in the attempt?

Darthor is seeking to dethrone King Uthar. He is on his way to conquer Norghana and take the crown. He has invaded the kingdom and has a host from the Frozen Continent at his command; Wild Ones of the Ice, Snow Trolls, Albino Ogres, Semi-Giants, Tundra Dwellers, Arcanes of the Glaciers, and creatures unlike anything anybody has ever seen before.

Uthar gathers together his armies and prepares to repel him. But not all the Norghanian nobles are with the king. The Western League does not support him, and they want to regain the crown for the West, for the Olafstones.

Lasgol and his partners will have to overcome an arduous second year of instruction at the Camp if they want to become Rangers one day. The tests will be far harder and the effort required much greater. Rivalries will surface, but so will companionship and even love. He will find out that he does not know the whole truth about what happened to his parents or about his new friend Camu. New mysteries, which he will have to investigate and solve, will arise and drive him to confront life-and-death situations.

Will Lasgol and his friends survive the second year of training? Will they survive the war? Will he succeed in solving the mysteries that surround him? Will he find betrayal...and discover the true enemy?

Entertaining with a great twist in the storyline

This series is pretty good, but it follows the same basic storyline as many other books similar to it, the classic underdog rising, finding out his family secrets and stopping or winning a war.
The book itself is engrossing as there are many questions floating in the air, and a jaw dropping ending to finish it off. I am looking forward to listening to the next book, and finding out the truth of the kings secret!

I'd recommend this series to any young listener. a stroy line that isn't always predictable keeps you on the edge of your seat!

A bit disappointing.

I AM enjoying this series and have just purchased the next book, though they are WAY TOO SHORT making it a very expensive series to buy, getting through 1 book per day, I would much prefer 30+ hours.
BUT I felt we went significantly backwards in two ways....minor spoiler
.
. BTW The narrator is really great and does a great job at creating individual characters.
.
.
. At the start of this book Lasgol looks to have matured significantly over the previous years' experience, getting his home back, getting a house attendant, avoiding revenge and progressing with his magic, but once he gets back to the training camp, he regresses, making stupid, childish decessions, their fitness has regressed and what really annoyed me is later on when they were debating who to believe and whether the king is a good person, they completely forget the king's atrocities against the ice people, deciding he must be a nice person because he does a few superficially nice things. This really frustrated me, I was thinking, use your brain, he's not a good person...

Just generally I feel like the main characters are 12 or 13 year olds, not 17 or so years. Given the experience's over the previous year together, they should be very mature adults but I really don't feel this, especially in the case of the big guy and their irrational fear of magic despite it having saved their lives and only been used for good.

Great book

Harry Potter meets LOTR. In no means as epic, but great for adventure seekers. Great performance.

ok

cute story but there's alot of repeativeness in the narrative and the distrust in his friends gets tiring considering what they've all gone through together and time spent together

it has its issues

overall it's not a bad book. continues from the first though there seems to be some continuity issues I picked up on. I spent a lot of it hoping Egil would be killed off just so I didn't have to hear the word "fascinating" anymore. it is said so much it actually starts to ruin the enjoyment of the book.
