*A STUNNING NEW STANDALONE THRILLER FROM THE AUTHOR OF THE BESTSELLING HARRY HOLE SERIES*

In the far north of Norway a man lives a peaceful existence. However one day his younger brother, always the more successful and charming of the two, turns up to visit, accompanied by his new wife. It soon turns out that the little brother is not quite as angelic as he seems.

Set in a small town filled with secrets, this compellingly dark new thriller from the Sunday Times number one bestseller has a plot as explosive and multi-layered as any of the Harry Hole novels.

Critic Reviews

I read THE KINGDOM and couldn't put it down...suspenseful...original...this one is special in every way.
Jo Nesbo remains the king of Scandicrime.
Superbly written and magnificently chilling
This being Nesbo there is plenty of deception, death and partial decapitation to come. No Harry Hole this time, but still a sombre delight. There are shades of a Nordic Ripley, or maybe Virginia Andrews on aquavit. Choose your poison
The Kingdom is a stunning novel from a storyteller with few equals (Jon Coates)
Brilliantly chilling (Deirdre O'Brien)
The pace is uncharacteristically gentle, which is well-handled by Nesbo. But it all ends up as enjoyably over the top as ever
This standalone promises to be another disturbing thriller as only Nesbø can write them.
The latest stand-alone from the chronicler of Inspector Harry Hole puts all the murky, violent twists on brotherly love that you'd expect from this leading exponent of Nordic noir...The illusions of a family and its close-knit town constructed and demolished on a truly epic scale.
With echoes of such classic noir authors as Dorothy B. Hughes, James M. Cain, and Jim Thompson...Nesbo brilliantly uses the insularity of Roy's world, both internally and externally, to accentuate the Shakespearean inevitability of the impending tragedy.

Without doubt the Kingdom is beautifully written and crafted , together with Sean Barrett made it a 5 star listen.
Did I like the book? No. DId I listen to it in 2 days or whenever I had the chance? Yes, Did I like the characters? No.Did I like the setting, bleak and cold? not particularly, do I care about Service stations, not in the slightest, or characters as cold and bleak as the setting, and yet....
It seems to me Jo Nesbo is asking his readers to really step out their comfort zone and partake in a journey which is not particularly pleasant but one you want to go on anyway.
I know for certain I wouldn't like to do it again, and hope it's never made into a Scandi TV series, as it will be as bleak and cold as the book and of course I will watch it.
The story unfolds and draws you in, whether you want to or not. Of course, give up 5 chapters in and return it, or keep listening and before you realise it, Karl, Roy and Shannon become an addictive listen. Because you have to know what will happen and when you finally find out, wish you hadn't.
Give the kingdom a go, then watch the TV series DES with David Tennant for some light relief!!

Brilliance

My first non Hurry Hole story from Nesbo but the result is the same. Twists and turns that kept me engaged throughout with the Norwegian landscape a significant presence. If you like Harry Hole try this

Another engaging tale

As the my title suggests the author is a ‘out there’ character and thanks to that fact he can put together a twisted narrative of insecurity and profound sadness that grips you from start to finish.
Sean Barrett as usual adds the menace and sorrow with his passion for the story.
I love hearing his voice on anything that has murder and mystery. Well worth it

Jo Nesbo you’re out there

A dark, rich addictive story superbly delivered by one of the greatest narrators around. Bravo!

Utterly brilliant!
