When a violent storm descends upon Orkney, the body of Archie Stout is left behind in its wake. An
unusual murder weapon, a Neolithic stone bearing ancient inscriptions, is found discarded nearby.
Archie was a popular, larger-than-life character, making his death a shocking blow to the
community.

Detective Jimmy Perez, no stranger to the complexity of human nature and the darkness it can
harbour, is soon on the scene. He counted Archie as a childhood friend so this case is more personal
than most. Now living in Orkney with his partner Willow and their son, Perez is soon drawn into the
lives of the islanders, many of whom carry secrets. Dark secrets that could have led to the man’s
murder.

Here, in these ancient lands where history runs deep, Perez must discern the truth from legend
before a desperate killer strikes again . . .

It's like greeting an old friend. I enjoyed the journey and the chance to get to know new areas.

The careful construction of the storyline, the interweaving of the plot & the strong characters drawn with depth & precision made for a very readable murder mystery. From today’s news subtexts such as the manosphere & young men’s exploration of internet misogyny gave the novel moment. The back drop of island history acted as a solid way to ground the story & provide a diversion for hiding the real motive & killer.

The murder plot and the setting were excellent (I now want to visit Orkney!) but something was missing, a sort of feeling or emotion from the Shetland books.

Also Perez and Willow are exceptionally terrible parents to poor little James. That was hard to believe after he was so good with Cassie.

The new police side characters, Ellie and Phil don’t fill the massive Sandy sized hole. I miss Sandy!

Miles was excellent though and I hope he reappears in future books. He has massive potential.

Nice to experience Orkney but something is missing from the earlier Shetland books

I really enjoyed this, not least because I was so happy to hear more of Jimmy’s story. I thought it built quite well, but the ending felt a bit Agatha Christie, in that it was so unlikely & a bit rushed. I felt as though some of the elements were not in there & just presented in the last minutes. Overall, good.

Great story, very relevant
