Publisher's Summary

Mary Jago had donated her own bone marrow to save the life of someone she didn’t know. And this generous act led directly to the bitter break-up of her affair with Alistair. For him, it was as though her beauty had been plundered.

But the man whose life she had saved would change Mary’s life in a way she could never have imagined.

Superb story telling

This is an amazing book. i expected a well written crime novel but nothing out of the ordinary. The characterisation is terrific -- great emotional relationships and back-stories. it is more 'literary fiction' than i'd anticipated - but wow, when the crimes come and the twists and turns happen, it really takes off. Impossible guess how this plays out. it's not just a whodunnit but about the detail of the plot which is superbly well done.
Brilliant.

My first Ruth Rendell book

And sadly I think it will be my last. The story was slow and fragmented and the ending was strange and confusing. If this hadn't been a freebie I'd have been requesting a refund. Even the narration wasn't great. It grated on me that he kept saying Irene Adler as I-REE-NEE, rather than I-REEN. Just disappointed, I really wanted to enjoy Ruth's book.
