Publisher's Summary

Katie Price is baffled when a man claiming to be her grandfather leaves her his entire estate in the Scottish Highlands. The bulk of the estate consists of a thriving whisky distillery and a moldering castle, where the eccentric old man actually lived until his death. The will stipulates that Katie must travel to Scotland and claim her inheritance in person.

As Katie’s stay extends from weeks into months, she uncovers the secret that led to her mother’s birth, and begins to unravel a 250-year-old mystery surrounding the beautiful young wife of the last laird of Clan McBride. According to local lore, Isobel McBride vanished from the castle without a trace shortly after the Battle of Culloden, and some believe that her ghost still walks the battlements at night. A strange dream in Isobel’s tower room leads Katie to Isobel’s hiding place, where she discovers love letters from a man other than Isobel’s husband, his initials being the only clue to his identity.

As Katie begins to unearth the clues to Isobel’s fate, she embarks on a romantic journey of her own and finds a new life she never expected.

Author's note: Due to several complaints, the book has been extensively re-edited as of July 20, 2013.

Disappointed

Can't finish this book and returning it. The narrator is not good at all. The accents are not there, hard to listen. I was so disappointed, reading the information and some of the reviews I thought OK sounds good, but after listening the story doesn't develop well at the start. Not sure how it ends because I just can't listen to it.

BowRing!

Narration was amateurish, the story kept going back and forth from past to future making things confusing at times. The main characters who I thought were the ones from the future, were merely a side bonus story, which wasn’t much of a story at all and really neither was the older story. All half baked if you ask me.

A bit too fairy tale like

Story not really exciting- pretty predictable and just not great.
Writing nit great either .
Author does get better with later books. Narrator was completely wrong for this story - terrible Scottish accent.

First Time’s the Charm

In 2010 Katie Price is stunned when a man she never met leaves her a brewery and a castle in Scotland. She thought her grandfather had been dead for years, but as she goes to Scotland to inspect her inheritance with the help of local lawyer Danny, she learns more about herself than she ever thought possible.

In 1744 Isobel McBride enters an arranged marriage that leaves both parties miserable. Her husband is a careless brute who loves another and she craves the affection she thought she'd one day have. But another man offers her his heart, the entire future of the clan is in danger from more than just the coming war.

Two women, two hundred and fifty years apart, brought together by a pile of love letters and a castle filled with memories.

It's always so exciting to see how Shapiro writes her time hopping style of work. Each series and standalone book flip between worlds, connecting through memories, second lives, or faded letters in a hidden alcove. The methods she uses never grow stale and I'm always thrilled to see a new book in her collection.

I did have some issue with the narration. I think Wendy Wolfson spoiled me in her other work with Shapiro's Echoes From the Past series and it was easier to find fault with the narrator in this book, particularly when it came to the Scottish accents. But as the book went on and I was drawn deeper into the story, it was easier to ignore.

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this book and wish there was more of Katie's story out there, particularly when it comes to her handsome Scottish lawyer.

Loved This Story!

I really like romance stories with a bit of mystery to them and this story did not disappoint. I’ve read and listened to other stories by this author and was quite prepared to be regaled with a tale that has it’s suspenseful plot based both in the distant past and also in the present-time. I was totally caught up in this story…wondering how it would progress and especially how the mysteries in this story would play out. I voluntarily reviewed this after receiving a free copy.

Interesting Listen

Spoiler free review:

The story is vey interesting by two different stories on in the past and how it intersects the future. Ms. Shapiro does a wonderful job pulling you into Scotland current/past. I found myself more invested in the past story more than the present but I enjoyed it as it was a style I have not encountered before.

The narration was ok, however, she struggled with the accents and maintaining continuity throughout. Some other reviewers struggled with it. But I was ok. You do need to pay more attention during your listen as the time period jumps can sneak up on you if you are multi-tasking.

Past and Present love story

Katie gets a surprise call telling her she inherited a castle and brewery from her grandfather she has never known about. The stipulation was, she had to go to Scotland before she could claim her inheritance. There she finds intrigue and mystery surrounding the history of the castle. This has 2 love stories. One regarding the history and mystery of Isobel, and the other the developing romance concerning Katie. I loved how Irina Shapiro weaved both the past and present throughout the story. Charity Spencer's narration was good. I enjoyed listening to this audio book. I received a free code in exchange for an honest review.

Wow!!! Incredible Listen

The Inheritance by Irina Shapiro is a captivating listen. I was immediately pulled into this story. I love how the author meshes 2 stories in one with a mystery at the heart of the book. The imagery is so well done, the characters are intriguing, and the narration was perfect. Charity Spencer brought the characters to life with her voice. I could easily hear who was speaking. I requested this review copy audiobook and have voluntary written this review. I will most definitely listen to more books by this author and narrator. Awesome ending to this standalone listen.

Engaging dual time novel

Katie Price is bewildered when she receives a call from Scotland, notifying her of the death of the grandfather she never knew she had, who has left her his estate in the Scottish Highlands. The will stipulates that she must travel to Scotland to claim her inheritance in person. Intrigued, she takes a vacation from her teaching post in the States, in search of answers. Weeks soon turn into months, however, as she not only unearths buried family secrets but also manages to unravel a 250 year old mystery surrounding the disappearance of the Laird’s wife, Isobel, following the Battle of Culloden.

The Inheritance is a stand alone dual time novel which alternates between 2010 and 1744, ultimately ending in the doomed Battle of Culloden. Having read the author’s exceptional Echoes of the Past series and being a huge fan of all things Scotland, I was intrigued by the synopsis and decided to give it a go. Once again the author has managed to seamlessly blend the past and present and grab the readers attention from the offset.

The primary timeline sees our heroine travel from the States to Scotland and fall in love with the people and its landscape, which is probably what her mysterious grandfather wanted for her all along. The second timeline starts with a marriage of convenience to settle a dispute between two warring clans and the events leading up to the Jacobite rebellion that ended in the ill fated Battle of Culloden.

Despite some of the negative reviews by other readers, this is in fact one of Irina’s earlier works and shouldn’t discourage readers from exploring her later books, particularly the aforementioned Echoes of the Past. Personally I thought it was perfect for willing away a couple of hours, in fact I finished it in a day. I recommend this to fans of historical fiction, dual time novels and lovers of all things Scotland.

I received an advanced free audible copy of The Inheritance and I am voluntarily reviewing it. This is the first time I have listened to Charity Spenser’s narration and I was impressed by how clear and concise her delivery was. She did struggle a little with the Scottish accent but I really liked her tone and pace.

Another Good Read!

What did you like most about The Inheritance?

I knew I would like this book, as I have read a few of this author's novels. However I had not read this one. I like to listen on audible to relax and found this a quite relaxing story. It kept me interested and wanting to know what was coming next. We often anticipate the ending to a story but for me it is not about the end, it is about how we get there!

What did you like best about this story?

I liked " The Inheritance " partly because it was set in Scotland a place I love. I did wonder how this inheritance would turn out, but very well in the end. The story was well thought out, with well drawn likeable characters. Sorry to say goodbye to them!

Have you listened to any of Charity Spencer’s other performances? How does this one compare?

This is the first performance of Charity Spencer I have listened too. it took a chapter or 2 to get with her reading, but she did it very well I thought.
