Story
This is the true story of Keith Banks, one of Queensland's most decorated police officers, and his journey into the drug scene as an undercover operative in the 1980s. In an era of corruption, often alone, with no backup, he and other undercover cops quickly learned to blend into the drug scene, smoking dope and drinking with targets, buying drugs and having dealers arrested. Very quickly, the lines were blurred between his identity as a police officer and the life he pretended to be part of.

Did he suffer from antisocial and paranoid personality disorder, or was he, as some experts say, just born to kill? Born with an “evil gene” in his blood?

Story
In the Australia of the 1960s, '70s and '80s, armed robbers were the top of the criminal food chain. Their dash and violence were celebrated, and men like Ray Denning and Russell 'Mad Dog' Cox were household names long before Underbelly established Melbourne's gangland thugs as celebrities. Both were handsome, charismatic bandits who refused to bow to authority. Both were classified as 'intractable' in prison, and both escaped. Cox was the only man to escape from Katingal, Australia's only 'escape-proof' jail. Soon after he broke out, he tried to break in again and rescue his mates.

Started out promising, but...
I really loved this book in the beginning, but soon realized the material the author had to work with was pretty thin and the book soon got very boring. It was a major disappointment when it got to the trial which was wrapped up in what seemed like minutes -- a real anticlimax. The narration was entertaining in the beginning, but the "goodfella" accents got really wearing after a while. Would not recommend to anyone.

Read the other Iceman book. This one is a waste of time.
I've read the other Iceman book by Philip Carlo multiple times. Thank god I have because without that book it would be impossible to follow this one. This book jumps timelines every chapter, completely leaps past important events in Richard's life and reads like a fictional crime novel you'd buy in a gas station.
Don't waste your time or money. Read the book by Philip Carlo.
The narrator was talented and his accents and ability to portray multiple characters in a conversation was impressive but he spoke Richards "lines" in a whisper, not great if you listen to these books on the road. I was constantly turning the volume up and down.

Bronson Pinchot. A Masterful Narrator.
Would you try another book from Anthony Bruno and/or Bronson Pinchot?
Pinchot, definitely- bruno, probably not. I thought that this would be about the extensive interviews that the Iceman did. It isn't. The Iceman interviews are far more chilling because it is an in-depth glimpse into what makes the Iceman tick and how he could live such a double life.
What about Bronson Pinchot’s performance did you like?
He has showcased once again what an incredible range of accents and line readings he has. Incredible! Gave me chills.
Any additional comments?
For fun, I'd highly suggest listening to Pinchot's narration on the life of Angelina Jolie- the levels of annoyance, boredom and disgust (listen to the passage wherein Jolie describes her love of Billy Bob Thornton's nether regions. I laugh every single time. Yet still, he manages to rise above the dreck of the memoir and add gravitas to it. Listen to it-you'll see.)

Great story, read superbly!
I've listened to several audio books of late, and this has been a wonderful selection. The story was engaging and well written. Te narration was excellent; I had no idea Pinchot was such a good voice talent. His depictions of the many players in the story were varied and riveting. Well worth the money. Well worth the time.

Excellent true crime and narrator!
Would you listen to The Iceman again? Why?
No once is enough.
What other book might you compare The Iceman to and why?
There's no comparison.
Which scene was your favorite?
So many great scenes.
What’s the most interesting tidbit you’ve picked up from this book?
What an undercover agent will go through to get a killer.
Any additional comments?
Although the book is about a horrible monster, it is one of the very best true crime books ever. The narrator has to be one of the absolute best I've ever heard! He did so many characters excellently!

A lot of perspective
An interesting listen. I've read and listened to the other books, but this one holds its own. There are extended periods of time in which the book focuses primarily on the agent tasked with trapping Kuklinski, making one wonder if it was really about the killer or not. But eventually it does flow back to even out. Perhaps a better title would have been one that shared top-billing with the agent, Dominick Polifrone. Bronson Pinchot does quite effectively make entertaining use of voice characterizations for main characters, though I did start to wonder why the Irish-American agent (aka IRA girl) sounded suspiciously like Kuklinski. He's got good voices, maybe just not a lot of them. A good look at both the killer's home life and the undercover agent's work to bring him down.

No
Which character – as performed by Bronson Pinchot – was your favorite?
None
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from The Iceman?
True crime readers are a special breed.
Any additional comments?
This just was a book the Library of Congress really did not need.

Captivating Story, Poor Performance
This is the first time I have listened to a book that I have already read in 'hard copy'. Dont think I'll do that again.!! The story and factual portrayal is still riviting but the delivery is very weak. Its a shame that such an unbelieveable character is presented in such a limp way. The hard copy delivers the 'Ice Man' in such a cold and calculating way that you almost dont want to continue reading ! On a more positive note, if you havent read the hard copy first then the audio version would have a similar but , toned down impact, a good listen if you havent read it befor !!
